Hi All,

I just wanted to confirm the direction I should be turning the oil filter on the 1UZ to remove it - if I were standing directly in front of the motor?

Thanks

Hahaha, yep Daniel
The worst oil filter I ever had to remove was on a VS commodore. The fool who put the filter on had left the existing oil filter seal on there, and then put the new oil filter on. So two seals - and you guessed it - it blew and caused a massive oil leak.

The oil filter was on so tight that when we got the oil filter removal tool onto it and started twisting, it actually started crushing it.

Big screw driver and mallet method.
Bash it right through the middle of the filter (make sure you catch the oil coming our of the new holes) and lever the bastard anticlockwise (same as standard threaded applications).

best tool is a jaw filter tool. as you tighten it it clamps harder. ive never had it fail and it will crush it before it slips

Another vote for screwdriver and mallet never failed me, Sometimes in tighter spots I put a hose clamp on the filter, tighten it and use a large screwdriver and hammer to get it loose.

Finally got the oil filter off today, it took about 2 full turns with the oil filter wrench BEFORE the oil filter started to turn easily!

Bloody ridiculous, lucky the threads weren't stripped.

By the way, switching to 5w-30 from 15w-60 has has made a very obvious difference to the motor, the engine definitely revs more freely, and sounds less laboured. I wish I had done it much sooner! My poor car.

Kadir, what brand did you use? Is the 15w-60 a thinner oil?

Hi James,

5w-30 is thinner, and is what's recommended for a healthy 1UZ motor (V8) - But everyone has an opinion on this.

Personally I would never go above 10w-30 (bigger number=thicker) , unless your motor is particularly worn.

I used the Castrol brand - fully synthetic.

Hrmm, I should change my oil then. It's been close to 5,000ks since my last change.

Provided you use a good filter and oil, and aren't track daying it, 10,000km's is fine in the 1UZ - turbo charged engines need more regular oil changes, so the 1JZ-GTE guys will be changing their oil every 5000.

Agree with Matthew, Ive seen others say "must change every 5" But I agree this is overkill. As long as you use high quality oil, and at least check the levels every 2-3k and top up as necessary, 10k change is fine. Especially in a N/A highway cruiser like ours.

Amsoil and a number of other manufactures have proven that there oils don't wear out or need to be replaced. Amsoil did tests with a toilet roll filter and used the same oil in trucks for 160,000km without issue.

The only reason for replacing the oil is to replace the filter which is clogged up and goes into bypass at about 5,000km.

Hah, I hadn't heard about that one! My mates Cayman S's service period is 20,000km believe it or not! Being such a highly tuned engine I would have thought it would need more changes not less.

I have noticed quite a few newer cars are using longer service intervals but then at the same time the cars are not being built to last as long as they used to.

One of the new model falcon's trans doesn't have a sump plug and was not intended to have the fluid changed ever. With autos failing a little over 100,000km with light use that isn't IMO a cost effective option over changing $100 worth of fluid every 50,000km....

As long as the Trannie has a dip stick you can suck the oil out with an electric pump, same with the Engine a lot easier than crawling underneath and you pump the oil straight in to a container for disposal.

Yes I am aware of that but two things, the pump systems don't work all that well and only change the oil in the sump and the Ford manual I believe didn't provide any service interval for the auto trans.

Yeah, I was amazed when we bought our new Lancer that the service intervals were 15,000kms!

On another note I was also surprised that the oil change on the Harrop was 50,000kms.

I guess that is because they have very different tolerances, minimal components and greatly reduced heat. Not to mention no filter.

The older eatons had 80,000km change intervals.

Moral of the story, don't buy a Ford.
