Trying to find out if its possible and if so how much $$ to make my car sound stock on idle and normal driving. BUT growl like a V8 should when you kick it.

Hahaha rush headers and a catback will achieve that with the right combo of mufflers, hotdogs, and an x pipe.

Cameron - entrust the job to someone who has done plenty of 1UZFE exhausts before, and you'll get the sound you're looking for.

Remove the rear mufflers only (the last 2 not the last 4) and replace them with tri flow mufflers often called turbo mufflers. If it is not quite to your likeing replace the middle 2 mufflers with pipe or straight through mufflers. Don't go bigger than 2.25 size pipe.

has any one had any experience with the varex exhausts. that way it seems i would be able to keep the stock (ish) sound then open them up and get a V8 sound

I've heard of them before, they seem like a bit of a gimmick, electronic parts of that sort in exhausts will just fail, especially at a consumer level, and how long will that remote last? I assume those mufflers are just typical Chinese produced low grade stainless units.... Yes, they look nice and shinny now, but how will they look sound 1-2 years later in harsh Australian conditions. I would just stick with tried and proven brands like Magnaflow. You would get much better value that way.

I have a Mate with these on his Forester. Probably had them for a few years with no issues but they are illegal.

Exactly Ali. Laws should be encouraging this kind of thinking, being that it allows people to have a nice, quiet car for driving day to day, and something to let her rip on track days! Of course there are cars now with factory setups that ARE legal, simply because its OEM. Stupid double standards.

Why not just get the centre resonator removed and leave all the stock mufflers? That should give the V8 burble with out too much increase in noise level.

Yep, as Peter said - I'm in the same position and was going to do this. Quote was $300 from the local exhaust place, will give this a go and feed back

$300 sounds a bit steep, get another quote first. That said, I haven't had any exhaust work done for ages.

Hmmm I think my exhaust guy said $200 when I asked about this once. It's a good way to go, the stock Y joins and single resonator combination are terrible for performance and the sound.

should i keep the pipes joined in a 2-1-2 system as it is now or split them completely. apparentely the latter give a more 'classic' V8 rumble but may loose 5-10kws

It is a personal thing really. The note sounds very different unbalanced as apposed to a balanced system with either an X or H pipe The power thing is negligible in my opinion, if there is any difference you are not going to notice it and it's going to be tiny anyway. From my experience a well done non balanced system is my pick, or a H pipe system. I don't really like X pipes as they tend to muddle the note and also making it harsh/thrashy.

With stock power output weather an X, H or straight through really wont make a difference to power. It will be pipe diameter.

Agreed. And here is an interesting read. http://www.aussiev8.com.au/members-lounge/25611-x-pipe-vs-h-pipe-exhaust.html |

Cameron, my UZZ30 has split pipes and still made 149.7rwkw at the last dyno day I did. A couple of years ago another member did a dyno before and after fitting an X-pipe and got no measurable difference other than a drop in noise level.

Thanks for feedback on price thought it felt a little steep, this was from Midas. Can anyone reccommend a place in Sydney? Also, how loud is it likely to be if I cut out resonator and split the two sides, but leave everything else as is? (standard system)

Pretty quiet, won't sound epic, but you will know its a V8. The stock mufflers are chambered things, so it will still be quiet.

That's all I'm using the x-pipe for on the system I'm fabricating... I'd still like to be able to drive my car to work at 6am without the neighbours throwing molotov cocktails at my house! |

Wouldn't they be more restrictive than an X pipe? |
