hi all,

decided that it is time to change the orings on the active suspension pump. cant seem to find where to release the tension on the lower belt. for non active v8 owners, a '32 has 2 belts, an upper serpentine and a lower one which drives aircon, power steering and suspension pump. i'm trying to get the lower one off

thanks

Hi Alex,

First off why do you think your suspension pump needs the 'O' rings changed. Mate these are a complex bit of gear and if you don't know what you are doing, it will end up costing you a fortune. Look at $5500 for a new one!!

The lower pulley is the adjustment for the pump belt. You have to loosen the centre bolt on the pulley and then loosen the long adjusting bolt that runs up behind the casting and pulley. This pulley is the lowest to the ground.

Pumps don't usually give any trouble if they are maintained correctly. That means changing the fluid on a regular basis just like all the other oils in the car. The dust boots on the struts need to be inspected regularly and replaced immediately if they are split. This is the most often cause of scored chrome legs and hence oil leaking - sagging suspension when not being used.

Hope this helps.

Hi Daryl,

many thanks for your advice.

i have refurbished front and back struts and had them 'taplined' i.e regassed and regassing valves inserted. problem is that with all of that the front bucks essentially on a consistent basis when car is at rest. seems to be worse when car has been put through its paces. having done all the above and still plagued with this bucking, the only thing left for me to do appears to be replace the o rings in the pump. i am happy if you have any suggestions as to what else may be causing the problem

thanks again

I wouldn't have thought the Pump would be causing your problems . One thing you should do is maybe get Peter to see what pressure you have at the pump first . The bounce problem with almost 100% of the 32's is low gas in the struts . That's something I would check before you go pulling the pump apart . There is the Valve Body also on the left hand front that may have a bad valve or seal.
I had some struts filled by a guy years back in SA and told me it would be 100% better when i put them back in , I did't get a chance to do it for a few weeks and when i did the car would bounce just sitting in the drive way , i couldn't drive . I didn't think it was the struts and started looking everywhere else , that little deal cost me $1000's and it turned out to be one of the shocks he did lost its gas but the time i got the in the car . Was the car doing this before you did the struts or is this something new ?

Changing the seals in the pump will not, in my opinion stop the issues you describe, i.e. the car "bucks" when at rest. Now I take from this, the suspension is continuously making adjustments to achieve the correct ride height. This differs from "bounce" as a result of the accumulators being low on pressure. This is a lot more violent.

This would be the result of the valve body and the seals on the solenoids that control fluid distribution to the struts.

An overhaul kit is less than $100.

Hey Mario,

Yeah, it's going alright I guess as far as a car up on stands goes, hahaha.

I'm hoping to have a majority of the suspension done this month and completed by the end of Jan 2011.

Once I have it handling properly, the 14psi pulley, water/meth and a re-tune will be done and a T56. Do a bit more driving in the old girl than I have lately and get reacquainted so to speak. And when I get bored again, it will be a TTC stroker kit and engine rebuild and have Bullet fit a whipple I think. Oh and a shot of NOS just for the dyno!

Guys,

thanks a lot.
You've saved me a lot of time and effort. I'm a real schmuck. It's the o-rings for the valve body that i have.

i would have started pulling the pump out and then would have realised my mistake.

what the car does, apart from virtually continuous adjustment at rest, is when i go over a bump, it oscillates for a few seconds until it stabilises. the correction at stop can be quite violent at times. you should see the expressions of some of the other drivers!!!

cheers

ALex , Mine was doing the same thing , I did the o-rings in my valve body and shocks at the same time but my problem as i said was one shock lost all its gas. Hope the o-rings do the job as Peter's shocks are very well done and i wouldn't have thought it was them . In saying that there is a way to check to see if you have pressure in the shocks if you don't have a gauges to hook up . Peter Scott worked this out years ago and thats how i found that one mine had no gas and the other was down about 60% .

This does sound like the strut accumulators but as Mario has said Peter's units are very good.

How long have you had them for? It could be possible that if they have been in for a while that the gas has leaked out over time. It is easy enough to check though.

fixed his bounce issue with the valve body rebuild.

Cheers.

What's an easy way to check if gas has leaked out?
