Hi all, I need your help and as soon as I can as I have to use this car to get back and forth to work.

The car was running fine as usual with its slight miss, I parked it went into a mates house for about 25 minutes as soon as I started it again it ran like rubbish, so I limped it home.

It comes up with a Engine electrical system error. So i did some research on this site and changed a few capacitors in the ECU i noticed one was leaking. I didn't change all 5 yet, as 2 are on order so will do tomorrow. Plugged the ECU back in but still no difference.

The Soarer is a 1991 V8 Limited Auto

Help would be great

Could be coil pack, if it's sounding like a tractor and won't rev.

yeah thought that might of been the case to, the spark plugs are not old so cant be them.

I might try the coil packs again. I tried running diagnostic and comes up with EFI NG ECU NG but wont display the codes just -- no matter how long I wait

Hrmm, unplug one coil pack and see if the car still runs. If it does, but sounds like a tractor still, then that coil is okay - try the other, and if the engine dosn't start then you've got your answer.

I do realise one coil pack is easier to get to then the other.

Ok so i unplugged the coil towards the bottom of the engine and it didnt start just turnned over.

Than I plugged it back in and the car started and ran rough. so I turned it off again unplugged the top coil and the car started with it unplugged and ran rough.

Does this mean a coil is stuffed? if so which one?

Cheers

From that little diagnosis, I'd say your top coil pack is stuffed. You unplugged the bottom one, leaving the engine relying on the top coil pack. All the engine did was turn over - as it only had the bottom one working.

Your bottom coil is alright - as you said the engine turned over when they were both plugged in, yet didn't start when the bottom coil was unplugged meaning the top one is faulty.

Am I thinking straight? Either way, you should probably replace it and see if that makes a difference...

yeah engine wouldnt start with the bottom coil unplugged but would start with the top coil unplugged.

Strange thing is i thought i would swap the coils knowing atleast one was good so i put the bottom coil on top and top coil on bottom and tried the same diagnosis process. It did the same thing? so something isnt right here.

It's late and I've got to get up early. But it sounds like one of your coils is dead, or they both could be faulty. I'd probably replace them, but I don't want to tell you to go out and do this if it dosn't solve the problem.

It's gonna take me a few days to get a coil. Bursons can get them for about 85, or 130. Is there anything else I can test? O2 sensors, airflow meter?

Does anyone know how to test the coils with a multi-meter? And what ohms they should be?

Cheers

the top coil is stuffed

early model camry coils are the same if you have a wrecker handy.

to check with a meter, measure the primary(the 2 leads in the elect plug) should measure 0 ohms. measure from 1 of those pins to the HT lead. should be 12k ohms

ok well, I dug a little deeper and turns out my right rotor button was cracked so i order 2, thinking i will just replace both while i'm going.

I got my 2 rotor buttons today and replaced the right one and started to replace the driverside one and turns out, that rotor button was a pile of dust. So I replaced both and started the car and it still has a miss, different to the first miss(not as bad). It also throw up the error again.

As a side not has anyone had any success with removing TRC from these cars?

I'll have to see if i can get 2 dizzy caps tomorrow. Does anyone have the bosch number for these?

No I haven't checked the resistance of the coils yet. If I have time tomorrow I will.

measure the resistance of the plug leads.

do a search for the values .

resistance will increase with length of lead from a few Kohms for the short ones.

an open cct or really high resistance is what you are looking for
