Something strange has happended!
I had looked over the caps etc on the weekend, the right bank is stop on but the left is about 3mm-5mm from where it should be. Does this mean I need to open her up and do the timing belt?
However the weird thing is that when I did that there are two small wires going in the bottom of the dizzy cap on the engine side which were pulled out, cant get them back in and looks like there is not even anything to connect them too. (Mind you I was about 8 beers down at this time.)
It still runs and goes so I hope its nothing too heavily required.
Also I saw my thermo fan was not working so I run via a switch now which solved the over heating problem.
Weird thing is now that I solved the heating issue and pulled those two wires out the pinging has stopped???
Should I just run with it or are those two wires required to be hooked up and should be doing something (ie making it ping as there is an issue)

hi Rhys, i dont know what the wires are. I would double check the timing marks and then slightly turn the harmonic balancer and see how far out they are. As the belt gets old, it stretchs/wears a bit and gives a very slight change in the marks compared to a new belt. That is maybe what your problem is I believe if it has jumped a tooth, the engine will be running VERY rough, not just pinging. If you take the cover off that surrounds the dizzy, you can see the belt and get an idea on its condition.

hi rhys, this engine is a non interference design, so in the event of the belt snapping, there is no damage to any components, you only have the inconvenience of getting the car and yourself home.
Buy all the parts from the USA and do the full job.Look on planet soarer for a tutorial.
(I purchased a genuine water pump from Castle hill toyota for $160. Due to the freight/weight and also the reliability of the genuine pump it is worth going genuine.)
