Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me. A few months ago I crashed the front end of my soarer and i'm having problems getting it fixed properly through insurance. So i'm in in the process of learning as much as I can to get it fixed ASAP. First question: I have read on here that a leaky power steering pump will cause problems with the alternator which i now have to replace, is the leaky pump only due to wear and tear or could this have been affected in the accident? Or from dodgy mechanic work? Thank you to anyone that has answers for me, there are plenty more questions to come.

Yeah, I don't think you would ever get an insurance company to pay up on something like that. I did manage to argue them into replacing my radiator, but it was clearly bent by the accident and the assessor was just being a tool claiming it was old and would have failed soon anyway.
I took it to a radiator specialist and got them to certify that the undamaged portions looked to be in good order, an the insurance assessor backed down after a swearing match on the phone which ended in me threatening to call his manager and tell him the kind of language he was using with customers.
I guess if you could get a mechanic to back you up by saying the pump appeared to have accident damage, you might make some progress, but realistically being located where it is, its most likely old age.

Veronica,
Without having seen your car with it's accident damage, it is impossible for us to tell if the power steering pump was damaged in the accident.
Apart from that, unless the power steering pump has been worked on before, it will be the seals, 'O' rings that have gone hard with old age, which causes the leak. Make sure you fix the pump at the same time you repair the alternator, otherwise the same thing will happen to the alternator again.

Thanks for the info. Insurance are replacing the alternator because a hose came off the causing the leak onto the alternator, however the power steering pump seals are worn so I will definitely get the pump replaced. Can anyone tell me if a broken engine mount is possibly caused from the accident? Or is this due to wear and tear as well?
