Gates or Dayco for Timing belt?? Just wanted some insight as to which is the better brand as well as the most cost effective. Dayco has a complete kit which comes with a hydraulic tensioner, the Gates kit does not. Any opinions?

Gates is a top quality brand. Dayco is a budget quality brand.
If this is for a 1uz OEM timing belt is the best option as it is cheaper than most aftermarket belts and has timing marks which most aftermarket belts don't have.

If you dont get the oem belt i would get the gates timing belt. The gates is pretty much the same as the oem belt. The dayco timing belts are not all that good. In some cars the dayco timing belts are out by 1 tooth.

I have a dayco belt on my 1uz, and although I agree the gates is a high quality belt, I have had no issues with mine. I agree that the oem belt would be the better option. Recently I asked my Toyota dealer if they supplied a kit and they said they don't, but can supply everything separately. I will be using oem parts when I change my belt. I would also recommend replacing your water pump while you have it all apart, makes sense. Good luck.
