Ok with the cost of 98 fuel going through the roof (At current prices im going through over $100 of fuel a week) id like to be able to run 95

Problem is, my 1994 V8 has always pinged on it - just occasionally but still enough to be a concern.

Has anyone had success with using cooler plugs to prevent pinging like this?

Interesting to see a response. When I got my 31 I ran it on 91 and I quickly learned what pinging was.

I don't drive it so much that I go through $100 a week, but a response would be interesting.

I would be looking at a million other things to save fuel, rather than skimping on fuel quality.
Which will probably save you nothing, may even work out more.

I run 1 heat range colder plugs 7's and they work fine.

The factory plugs are fairly cold by OEM standards as most OEM plugs are a 5 heat range compared to soarers/toyotas which are 6. Hence I wouldn't think you could get away with running 2 ranges cooler.

Which rpm range is there pining, if it is below 4000rpm the ECU should compensate.

Oh it compensates alright... the car turns into a slug until i do an ECU reset

I might try a set of 7's (NGK) and see - if they dont make any difference (or foul up) i can always use them on the track car

They certainly haven't fouled up on mine, apart from the first 2-3 seconds of a slightly rougher idle they run like factory.

Has the oxygen sensor been changed? Could be slow to react, ie lazy oxygen sensor.

My UZZ32 has drinking about 18litres per 100km in HEAVY peak our traffic. Once I change the original OLD oxygen sensor she does about about 13-14litres per 100km.

Heavy traffic means 1 hour 20mins to travel 25km.

I use 91 RON std unleaded for daily driving and use 95/98 for long trips. No pinging on any of the fuel type.

Maybe you have a damaged or worn CAT.

If its retarding the ignition with lower grade fuel then one would conclude the knock sensors must be working

Wont be anything to do with the cats
