This is a continuation from my thread in brakes section:
http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/83418/343931.html?1306317719

After some driving, usually about 10mins, quite a bit of smoke comes from under the bonnet from the drivers side, closer to the windscreen. Seizing brakes, power steering leak has been ruled out. Just wondering what else is around that area that could smell/smoke up under heat?

Mmm i would of thought if it was rubber touching the exhaust it would have burnt all the way through with the amount of times i've seen it. Will be getting under the front end this sunday to check..will definitely be checking for any hanging rubber bits

If it is leaking oil id say engine cause of how low the dipstick is atm. But it's just the smell itself confuses me as i didn't think engine oiled smells like rubber when burnt...i'll smell it again going home tonight =\

I've never smelt a burnt clutch before so no idea, however this is very light driving. Today the smell came after like 5mins of driving.

Something leaking onto the exhaust makes sense, cause it would build up during parked...then once the exhaust heats up it burns it away? Which is why it only smokes badly once towards the start of my driving. That's my logic anyway but i'm hoping not as a oil leak when i just bought the car is T.T

Drain out a little transmission fluid and see if that stops any overflow.

rear seal is a common leak especially if you use a low viscosity oil. try a 15-30 or 15-40 if you are using a 5 or 10 viscosity.

Gonna change oil on friday, not sure what was in it before but i'm putting it nulon 10w-40 with some seal refreshener see if that works. Currently have the car sitting at home ontop of some cardboard to see if i can catch any leaks.

OK so something towards the cabin end, drivers side of the engine is leaking onto the extractors. Changed the oil/filters and let it idle to warm. So much smoke was crazy. This morning went out to check it again, noticed a little on the extractors smoking up, oil level didn't drop on dipstick (as far as i can tell). Will run it a week and check again to see if levels drop.

Put in some seal refresher stuff in with the oil change, see if that makes a difference. If oil levels continue to drop i'll have to book it into KYP or wtfauto to get it repaired. =\

Besides that loving the car lol

Oh forgot to ask, ill just tag it onto this post.

Is anyone running their car without the under engine protection plastic bit? The big grooved plastic panel and the vented smaller piece under the radiator?

Took it off to change filter and they look like hanging loose/low so i just left it off. Anyone have experience running without? Any problems?

Yang,
It is my understanding that the undertrays contribute to efficient airflow through the radiator and enginebay, but unlikely to be a drama to run without unless your cooling system is marginal.
They are also handy for spotting and sourcing any fluid leaks.

Would that only be the front vented panel or even the giant one covering up the main engine bay? Cause the vented one fair enough, it was still ok but the giant one was pretty demented( sloping down real bad, bit of scrapes on it too)

Brake pedal feels ok, comes on strong, squeeks a bit between certain braking points. Brake fluid is still full.

The master cylinder is the giant black circular thing yeah? nah the leak isn't below there so unless it's travelling i don't think so.
