How about not even having a timing belt like in the Toyota HJ60 2H (diesel)!!

I had a pulley seize up in my soarer and melt the timing belt but replaced the timing belt, pulley, tensioner and water pump and was good as new.

the Toyota service interval is 160k, I'm not sure where this 100k thing came from, Taxi maybe.

Why would being a taxi matter, if anything, the belt would be in better condition due to less passage of time.

Edit: Also I just don't really get why anyone would err anywhere except the safe side. It's not like you're even SAVING the 60 dollars, you're still going to have to spend it. Unless you extended it double.

Edit2: I've just double checked - neither the 1jz nor the 1uz or the 2jz seem to be interference engines. So, overall i guess there's not much damage you could do. But I'm not sure how well a boosted engine will handle when valves are opening and closing at random when the belt goes.

But overall you might be pretty safe compared to a lot of alternative cars. If you manage it yourself, and you desperately need that 60 dollars, just keep an eye on the belt. Should be servicing the car either way quite regularly so just make sure it looks in good condition.

I personally will stick to the schedule I didn't buy the soarer to be a cheap car. I bought it for it's features. I knew the upkeep and 60 dollars is a less than half a tank of fuel.

Right, well it's 60 dollars to me, because I'm on a forum which gives me guides and I'm not time poor and take an interest in my car.

Others who are may reconsider, but in which case if they're time poor they're probably not on the forum. So debating from their perspective is maybe not as helpful.

Nah, the title of the thread is "are timing belts overdone", if you want to talk about bearings and water pumps feel free, but you'd either have to agree or not that each of those components are either overdone or not.

In fact adding those in because you'd want to do them all at the same time leads to greater credibility to wanting to do the timing belt anyway as then there is less overhead in total (double doing the taking off the belt, which requires removing the fan and potentially the radiator).

I'd never under-replace the waterpump though, it's one of the most common things on a 1jz or 2jz soarer to have issues. I'm a little fuzzy on the 1uz waterpump. Maybe it's better. It's sure different.

But a service isn't the core point we're discussing.
