They are a clearance motor so it does not make contact with the valves.

Worst case if you are really unlucky, the broken belt may damage some part of the timing gear, but its fairly unlikely.

I recently purchased a V8 with snapped timing belt. Changed everything necessary and it runs great now. Make sure you replace the water pump and all timing belt involved tensioners.
Broken belts are usually the result of a ceased tensioner(s).
