The diagram, under the bonnet, shows the serpentine belt and how it loops around the various pulleys. It shows 7 pulleys but on my V8 there's only 6. Anyone know why? This is the 3rd belt in just over a year that's failed. The last one shredded all over the engine bay and this last one lost one rib and jumped off bringing up the alternator not charging alarm and the hot cat symbol.

is your car a 30-31 or 32? 30-31 have 7 pulleys & 32 should have 6 & then a separate belt for power steering. One of your pulleys could be bad & that would cause belt to shred or lose a rib

Yes a '32 so that's ok but wondered why they stuck a picture showing 7 pulleys. When the belt was off I had a feel around the pulleys but couldn't feel anything rough/sharp so no wiser. I'll talk to Toyota tomorrow and see if I can get any sense. Thanks Jamie.

It appears that the AC clutch pulley is out ie slightly forward a few mm and the the main drive pulley is then trying to pull it back into line but is instead ripping off the front rib. I've looked back through my invoices and the AC compressor was replaced Oct '05. At a later service in May '10 the belt was changed then I needed to replace it Dec '10 then again 4 weeks ago. If the AC pulley is the problem why was it ok for 5 years? Could the AC pulley have moved forward some how in 2010?
