Hi guys

My v8 just died. It seemed as if the power started to die with emv and dash flickering and fading with the power soon vanishing before the car turned off.

When I tried to turn the car over again it only made a clicking sound. Engine bay smells like something has burnt out? Any ideas

Quite sure it's not the battery, alternator is what I'm guessing.

Battery is obviously dead now if nothing will power on however as you say is probably not the real cause.

Recharge battery and then check the alternator - if it's died then the light should stay on, alternatively check the battery voltage under load to see if the alternator is charging.

Matt.

Put money on it that the power steering pump has leaked onto the alternator and fried it

Yeah sounds much like the alternator is not charging.

Noooooooooooooooo. I think you guys may be right. How much is an alternator and where can I get one?

Is it worth trying to fix it or just replace?

If it is the alternator i would probably not bother getting it rebuilt seeing as apparently you can get brand new ones off ebay for less than the cost of a rebuild

My auto elec charged me $120 to reco the alternator, he used the internals of a 100 series Landcruiser. I couldn't afford to get the power steering pump fixed.... I just used stop leak.

What exactly do you mean by the air suspension is not working? Does the car sag over-night or is making a terrible noise or unacceptable performance?

It has it's own air compressor so you don't need to fill her up. This is not the best way but when I jack up the car I can hear the compressor coming on and pumping up the air shock. Be careful, just do this very briefly and lower the car back very qently.

Others may have the proper way to let you hear the compressor cutting in. Like I say my method is not the best way.

Regarding the car struggling underload, I would check the coils.

Is the car low all round or is it just one wheel? The compressor is very quiet and most times I can hardly hear it. It is situated near the front driver side. I can only hear it from outside the car standing right next to the front wheel and it does not run all the time it only comes on when needed. There are lots of more knowledgable people here who are more than willing to help you. Just give this thread another day or so.

for the suspension, check for a blown fuse.

is the car only running on 4 cylinders? if yes as vincent has said check the coils.

either in the fuse box near the battery, or in the fuse box behind the side panel near the accellerator. I would look at the one near the batt 1st. should be labelled on the lids.

If the car is low all round then it is not a leaking airbag because it is highly unlikely that all 4 bags will leak at the same time.

Check the air compressor, does the car go up when you press the height switch to high? It takes a few minutes, if the height changes then the compressor is working.

If the compressor works then you can increase the height by adjusting the rods. There is a good tutorial here with pictures.
