Hey guys,

I have a set of headers that have been slightly warped, about 2ml out at its worst spot but varies depending where you put the steel ruler. I have taken them to 3 exhaust places and quite simply they have been uncomfortable putting them on for obvious reasons of leaking.

I understand I can separate the flange entry points, and use silicone/bolt/flange/silicon etc, however if I can get these machined to as even as possible first that would be great. I live in Melbourne and have called nearly everywhere!!!

Exhausts shops are practically a no go as they will say they are rubbish, and to bin the headers just so they can sell their own.

My question thus comes down to, does anybody have, or no of anyone who has access to any surfacing machines i.e. a grinding mill. I have been told you have to drop the engine before installing the extractors so thought I would prefer to do it once and do it right than risk a leak, removal, machined, then back on and pay double in labor.

Thanks my friends, I have a trusted family friend who will install the headers, he just doesn't do the machining!

You shouldn't need to drop the motor out for headers. I done mine in a weekend with the car lifted so i could get under properly. Its a mammoth task and a hoist would make it so much easier, but with a few swear words, the hardest part it dropping the factory 'things' out, after that your on easy street!! Goodluck!

Thanks guys, excuse the late reply!

OK found a bloke who has machined them down for me, unfortunately set me back $150 a pair. Really nice old guy that had his two nephews and him doing it an entire saturday - they grinding obviously not a problem it was get a grip on the akward shape. Man hours in total 8x3...24. Anyway I'd rather do it once and do it properly for peace of mind.

Extractors are getting fitted at the moment, bloke from Midas in Oakleigh is doing a great price on them and I highyl recommend going through him for any exhaust work. Whilst other places try to derogate the quality of the parts I supplied (as they would rather profit from there own supply and fitting) and not give me a straight answer -i.e. they didn't want the job, George stood out by simply providing a solution to the problem I came to him about. We negotiated a mutually beneficial price (which I have a feeling is much more beneficial to me) but I'll let you know how it feels with the BFI, Extractors, High Flow cats, 2.25 cat back + X pipe and Lukey Ultra flows on Tuesday!

no need to drop the motor, a slight lift with a trans jack under the pan helped.

I did not go with an x-pipe, I put in a twin 2.5 in - out muffler in the middle and mine is till a bit too loud running lukey race rears (same as ultra flow just welded not rolled case)
