I should add that it doesn't normally smell, it was only that I did not tighten the hoses properly after having everything off. No smell now.
The issue seems to be when I need all the fuel I can get, there isn't enough there, so it comes in waves, like it has to build up pressure?
When I am on LPG the LPG system computer allows petrol to be injected when the engine is on full load and full throttle. This could be why I am getting this surge of power regardless of whether I am on Lpg or on straight Petrol, if there is insufficient petrol getting through for some reason.

Sounds like when my fuel pump started to fail. The car would seem perfect, but when you needed power it got up,then surged almost like a limiter of sorts.. 2 wks later, less than 1 ltr/min flow rate....

How do I test to see the feed rate of my fuel pump? Where do I test it and with what? I guess the pump is removed via the access point behind the back seat?

can i suggest getting standard plugs gapped down with only one electrode??
think of it this way, electricity takes the shortest route,, splitting it four ways ( it wont jump 4 ways at once) not only gives it options but if it does split then that spark isn't 'twice' the intensity... it's halved......
please correct me if i'm mislead by my own experience..
iv had alot of dramas with cars missing and loosing spark under WOT in my w/shop and usually it improves if not cures the issue putting standard or equivilent single electrode plugs in...

Bosch guarantee these plugs to be superior to all others and offer a money back guarantee but maybe they are miss suited to my car that runs on LPG? I fitted the plugs before the LPG system. Could they be malfunctioning after 20,000? I was doing a compression test, all over 180 psi, and did not notice that the tester's adapter that screws into the spark plug hole stayed there when I took the gauge out and so I screwed a plug, single electrode into the adaptor instead of into the block and pulled down the tang of the plug onto the centre electrode, thus bending it tight against it. I only discovered what I had done when I tried to get the plug lead to seat properly and realized that it was sitting higher than the others.
When I tried to bend the tang back I broke the porcelain surround and so the plug is now no good. I will have to by another one to complete the set if I were to use them.
The car has run very well on these bosch plugs until recently. It is quite a job to pull everything apart again to change the plugs for the 3rd time, so will exhaust other options before revisiting the plugs I think.

Matthew, it is missing on start up too now but only for about 20 seconds. I will change all the plugs again when I get the chance, to be sure that all is ok. I have a set I took out of my 32 when I put new iridium single electrode in.

i would stress the point of buying new ones, but if u got some lying around then that would at least give a different demographic to the diagnosis/ trial an error

I will try the old single electrode ones to see if the plugs are the problem and if so I will contact Rock auto to see if they will give me a set of single electrode iridiums in place of the 4 electrode ones, as they are guaranteed by Bosch to outperform all others. Lets see tomorrow.

Thank you Matthew for your persistence. When I changed to NGK BKR6E the problem went away on petrol and nearly went on LPG. Actually the car is faster on LPG, accelerates more powerfully but lags a bit then fires ahead on WOP. Obviously I need to up the LPG map at WOT to get the max.
Great victory after a lengthy and a little expensive jaunt. On the other hand it was good to get new rotors, which were shot and new dissy caps were worthwhile and there is no disputing that it is good to have new leads.
