Personally, I wouldnt want the deep v8 rumble. I prefer the Maserati style high pitch sound. I guess thats basically all to do with the actual mufflers than the piping

Piping Diameter is a factor as well.

Anyone know what the stock muffler inlet diameter is ?

Yeah they must have some intense engineering in those mufflers to get that sound, its really unnatural.

They sound beautiful though!

The 6.2 AMG Mercedes also have a similar tuned sound.... equally as awesome.

Maserati style high pitch sound is that using the flat plane V8 ferrari engine?

If so the sound is due to the flat plane crank and the different firing order of the engine.

What he said. No amount of exhaust fiddling will get that sound, just as no amount of exhaust fiddling on a Commodore will get it as nice as a decent Soarer exhaust.

Well why does the 1uz sound the way it does? Small displacement? I think up top it has a real nice racecar sound. Probably my favourite sounding engine along with the 4.2 Audi rs4- personally.

Well for starters it has a cross plane crank, which is what gives traditional V8s their burble

The rest is really up to the exhaust and intake setup.

In stock / semi-stock forum they make quite a distinct sound thats easily recognizable.

2nd that with the Audi RS4 V8, possibly one of the best engine noises around.

I have never heard a v8 Holden/ford sound better then a 1uz. My mate had big cams in his hsv and still my 1uz sounds better. It just sounded sloppy and deep kind of sound with a rough idle. I want a 1uz alarm clock sound.

Haha yeah true.

You must remember a lot of Holden owners have no idea how to make their car sound good, however their are a few that do sound insane.

I've heard this one SS VE ute in my area... might be a Maloo, anyway it has a true dual exhaust and oh my god, what an amazing sound - best Commodore I've ever heard! It was similar to that of a RS4 except more throaty.

The intake, exhaust, port length and size as well as the cams have a big impact on the sound.

Exhaust setup aside the factory cams are very small a decent performance cam with more lift and longer duration gives the engine a better note with a silky smooth idle.

Much in the way of gains?

I am no expert on cams but from what I have seen yes and no. The off the shelf cams seem to provide small gains but they are a bolt on replacement.

A lot more is possible with bigger cams but further work such as stiffer valve springs is required.

Just had my exhaust done today. Straight twin 2" from cats to stock back mufflers. I dont like it.
Its too raspy. Still quiet at idle.Going to try some replacement rear mufflers next, and maybe a crossover in the 2 pipes.

Interesting allan,

What are the internals of the middle muffler like?

I'm guessing its jut a big chamber stuffed with packing around twin perforated pipes?

Well, had the rears replaced this arvo with 2" Auspac offset/straight thru mufflers, and now it sounds like a real V8
Idle is still very quiet, but get up it, and it sounds like it should. No drone at all, just good old fashioned V8 sound. Am thinking if I should put in a crossover pipe or not.
I will run with it for a few days or so, and see what I think.

Ian, unless it's too loud, leave the X pipe out.

Yeah, I dont mind it the way it is. Its only real loud(and not that bad) once you get up it.
For normal driving its OK. No droning at any speed, so thats a bonus. At normal idle, its quiet.

I had 2.5" straight through from cats, into 2.5" red back mufflers, and it sounded tough, but under pressure having a 'dip' it was really slappy, like an old 253. Now I have the headers, no cats(Shhhhh), and ran the pipes from the headers into a 2in/2out XR8 centre muffler, then out to the existing redbacks. Sounds awesome, and seemed to go a bit better, but the job was sloppy. So now it's running a Y from headers to 3" hotdog down centre tunnel and another Y back out to mufflers! Perfect!
It's all about how you like it. So many combinations to choose from.

I also have a Y into Y setup (like stock). Took my cats out (im in NZ) then ran 2.25' into Y, into big central resonator, into Y, into Coby rear mufflers. Very quiet on idle and cruise, but sounds mint in high revs.

It often takes a few changes to get what your looking for. Whenever I saw a soarer or celsior that sounded mint, if I could, I would ask the owner what the exhaust set up was.... I saw alot from axle dumps, to straight through, to singles. Y into hotdog/resinator and Y out to good mufflers and I don't think you can go wrong! (only my opinion)

To update an old thread, wasnt entirely happy with my "new" exhaust, too loud for me when cold(1st start up, and a little barky around town unless you pussied it around.
Just had 2 hot dog style resonaters fitted (from a VE Commodore V8 system) just in front of the diff.
Had them laying around, so only fitting cost.
Has taken the bark out, and quieter on cold start up. Am a lot happier with it now. Still sounds like a V8
