Has anyone every fitted a bigger oil filter to the V8? What is the reason for small and big filters on cars, or for that matter: why have so many different filters? What is the reasoning behind this? I have noted over the years that some manufacturers of special oils do sell bigger than normal filters. These is an example in the old Franz filter system that uses toiler rolls and does a great job, just need to make about a $400 investment and then there is the problem of space on our engines. Is there a bigger filter that would have more efficiency because of its size?

Do you use the factory Toyota filters? Ryco has a listing for soarer filters. The ryco fits on and suits the 1jz but does not suit the v8 even though ryco lists it as the replacement filter. It's too small for the v8.

Thanks Scott. Last time I changed it I fitted a Repco filter. What about the other questions that I asked? The original toyota filter is no longer made I hear, it is a cheaper more common construction made for them in thailand. Someone on here had a large buy up of the last of the original type if I remember. They were quite expensive I think, maybe like their fuel filters.

i changed the oil filter on my v8 last weekend, i work at supercheap auto, and i found the ryco listing was wrong, so i called them up and the filter is z418.

yes, I saw that at Super cheap last week but also saw a special high quality line that they have recently introduced. The problem is that it said that this premium filter is no good for racing. What then do they suggest for racing? This is one reason that I am asking about other alternatives that give good filtration and that maybe hold more oil.

John, a bigger filter wont hold much more than a normal one. Filters are designed to filter, not as a storage for extra oil. Even Ryco filters are made overseas now. Just get one from Toyota.

I've been using the made in Thailand filters but have used the smaller filters in the past. Z418 is the same size as the Toyota filters?

Don't think so Scott - the Ryco filters seem smaller than the Toyota ones

if the filter is bigger it would have more filter medium and would hold more soil I would think and so the filter will not go on bipass loop as soon if there was more soil in the system, ie. sand from dirt roads? I have a Mann filter from the U.S. on one of my cars and a repco on the other. The original Toyota filter was full of paper medium, different from what we see now when you look inside the filter. The Thailand Toyota looks like the Ryco. What about these premium filters from Super cheap and what are they saying in stating that they are not for racing, does that mean that they do not flow so quickly and so filter better?

I have found K&N oil filters for LS400s for $10 (buy 2 and get free post from the U.S. I am thinking that these filters are the same for all 4ltr Lexus/Toyota V8s that are designated 1UZfe and are better than Ryco or Repco and even better than the new Toyota ones and the right price.

I've been using 90915-20004 Original Toyota Japanese filters. Quite hard to find now though. They have a unique filter substrate thats since been replaced with paper types.

| I have been using these for 5-6 years for my v8, any larger and it would hit the chassis

Evidently the original Japanese filters were discontinued/transferred to Thailand for manufacture in 2003 ...however they have fairly recently recommenced manufacturing them in Japan (2012) I'm not sure on the shipping cost, but Curt Aigner from Elmhurst Toyota parts in US (you really have to love this guy...Ive bought heaps of parts from him) has them for about $10 each. The top 3 he recommends are : OEM Jap Made , TRD USA [ K&N ] , and Mobil One . Here's a link showing basic comparisons: http://mkiv.com/techarticles/parts/toyota_filter/index.html

Has there actually been any testing to show that Genuine Toyota filters are significantly better at filtering than Ryco or other common aftermarket brands?

A lot of filters are now made in Thailand. Had a look at an AC filter at Holden dealer today, and made in Thailand. I would quess all made in same factory, and painted/branded as required.

I've got a filter from work, which is supposedly the correct one.. but it's pretty small!! (donaldson filter) It only measures 75mm diameter, but only 80mm long.. Does this seem right? https://dynamic.donaldson.com/WebStore/search/item_detail.html?item=193229

Filter size isn't a problem for the 1uz; most car engine filters are designed with a 'safety factor' of at least 2. ie, the filter is twice as big as they thought it needed to be. People have done oil filter comparisons on the net and found little compelling evidence to switch filters. As long as you're changing oil and filter regularly, it's all good. I open up my oil filters (on my 1jz) and wash them with solvent to see if there are any problems... I've never found anything in any of my filters, ever. (That's not to say the filter isn't doing anything, it's just that there are no significant/large particles getting past the sump pickup).
