Hey guys and girls A few weeks ago i bought myself a lexus sc400 with an overheating problem long story short is the engine had rusted out most of its welch plugs and overheated heavily! and when i saw coolant in the exhaust i figured its time to save her life! so here we go! this poor engine had been through hell! was full of bloody stop leak! like easily 2 bottles! Had almost completly blocked one of the heads and was getting to work on the block and pump! Not to mention we drained about 8-10 liters of oil out of it!! i couldnt believe how stupid some people can be with cars! Luckily the rest of the engine was perfect. Bottom end was literally like new, i couldnt believe how good it was! Valves were lapped heads decked and all seals replaced. also this is what gave away the head gasket problem! Its still a work in progress so i will be adding more as i go, just thought id share my progress!

Good one Jack. Looks like the engine was full of sea water. At least you could save it.

Good work on saving the engine. Could be one of the worst cooling systems I've seen on a 1UZ - Really awful!

I hope you hardness tested the heads to make sure they had not annealed from being cooked and put new rings in it. a lesson to all RUN TOYOTA RED COOLANT...

Thanks guys! Yeah it was pretty nasty, not a lot of corrosion, mainly gross stop leak everywhere -_- plus it looked like they kept filling it with straight tap water :/ And nope I didn't really do much to the heads, aluminum can handle such massive temperatures I figured it would be okay. Especially on a low performance engine.... And I only assume it was overheated, owner stopped driving the car after it had a "coolant leak" -_- but judging by the state of it I don't think intelligence was particularly high in the previously owner... And yes Toyota coolant and fluids all the way! Ill just have to wait and see how she runs, fingers crossed!

by the way ditch all the ISCV and throttle body heating we don't get that cold here to need it and just run a quality bit of hose from front to back for the by-pass

Jack, aluminum is very poor at handling high temperatures! My supra blew a head gasket after heavy detonation while cruising due to a failed fuel pump. When I tore the engine down a few weeks ago it looked fine but i decided to have the head hardness tested just in case. Turns out my head is a paperweight.

I got it from eBay, has sat in Chicago since the 4th according to the tracking :/ Not brilliant. Was the only place I could find a knock sensor that was ridiculously over priced

nice work mate! at least the head looks nice and clean internally... I recently replaced the water pump on my 1jz as part of the major service, the internal water passages were sparkling clean- hart to tell the difference between old an new pumps side by side! It's had toyota red since I bought it (120k kms ago)

You sure they work? ;) David: yeah I've seen a lot of 1uz with super clean insides! Makes my feel bad for mine :/ amazing what a bit of good coolant can prevent!! |
