Just took the Soarer out for a drive, noticed it's making an electrical crackling sound - seemingly coming from the behind the dash around the steering wheel area.
Only starts crackling while driving - sounds like somebody is making popcorn under the dash.
When i stop to look, the crackling also stops.

Car still hasn't caught fire or blown up :-)

Anyone have the same issue or know what it could be?

Thanks

Couldn't replicate the noise today...
Well, that's a good sign I guess.
No noise, no issue :-)

(still wondering what it could be though?)

Good news is good.

Ok so i think i worked it out.
The clicking is happening more n more lately.

Whilst sitting in the car, i noticed that if i apply pressure to the seatbelt buckle thing - some kind of relay crackles n clicks under the dash...

If i push down on the seatbelt buckle - the dash starts clicking...
If i keep pressure applied to seatbelt the clicking under the steering wheel stops.
If i wiggle the buckle, the clicking starts again.

Insight would be most appreciated :-)

it points to the micro switch or lever in the seat belt buckle "sticking". try cleaning it out with an elect contact cleaner. also check/clean the plug.

This happened to me, and the driver's seatbelt plug sensor was loose.

Hi Tom, have not yet been out to the Soarer.
Will check in an hour or two :-)

It's the seatbelt for sure - most likely a wire has come out...

Funny story - a month or so ago i had dropped a smoke in between handbrake and seat.
It was lit.

I freaked out - and couldn't get the smoke out.
/did tip a bit of water down there...

Got smoke out 20 minutes later - only tipped like half a cup... But maybe that's why it is shorting.

Woulda assumed it's dry by now - but never the less, coulda caused damage, or simply the wire has come loose.

Will update tonight :-)

Oh, any pointers on how to plug it back in before i actually see the seatbelt thing again?

ie. seat forwards or back, layed down or what not.

Coz... Getting that smoke out was hard as hell, so I'm hoping i don't have to remove the whole drivers seat or something crazy...

Removing seat is pretty easy. 4 bolts... That's about it. 10 minutes or less.

Back with update!

Turns out the culprit is a wire which was snipped before i picked up the soarer.

There are 2 wires coming from seatbelt buckle, they must have been touching each other or what not, causing the dash to crackle. Never seen a seatbelt light on the dash come up though.

I took a spin before - made sure the wires were separate - and everythings fine so far.

Will have to tape them up.
Any reason that wire is there aside from making the dash say your seatbelt was not fastened?

Thanks :-)
