If anybody can help - I'm after a reliable Soarer mechanic type (who works in a shop basically and thus has insurance in case he blows my car up) in Victoria's western side. Soarer needs to go in and get itself sorted out once and for all i think.

Spoke to 'sports and luxury cars' in Ferntree gully Victoria as recommended in this forum for a power steering pump rebuild weeks ago, and he wanted 900 bucks for $80 bucks worth of parts and 1-2 hours work.
So, please don't mention that place :-)

Thanks for any leads!

I wouldn't personally rebuild the pump as second hand parts for these cars are so redly available, but also Sports & luxury cars are not going to charge that sort of money for the time & parts you say it needs & good luck getting the vane impeller if required & other bits for $80 bucks, so I'm guessing you need to get your parts cost & or time frame to do the work revised ..

http://parts.lextreme.com/kit.html

^ $52 (or $225) bucks for a rebuild kit there...

Now, i've never heard of a pump rebuild costing that much cash - so that's why I'm not calling him again. It would be cheaper just to go to the wreck yard as you are hinting.
Maybe I was misquoted as the guy thought i wanted something else done, but eitherway - I'm after someone closer :-)

Soarer has a few nagging issues - and it's really driving me nuts. Going around in circles...

I used to do a p/s pump exchange service for v8s
the Toyota kit of seals circlips etc as about $46 and a bearing was $20 . takes about 1 1/2 to rebuild pump.

Dave,
When I ordered one for my 91 '31 I was sent a rebuild kit exactly like the one you show from Castle Hill Toyota. On ToyoDIY this is said to be for a '98 Century.
I didn't need it, as it turned out, and just recently couldn't sell it to a potential buyer because it "wasn't the correct part number".
I suppose you can confirm this is the correct kit, because ToyoDIY doesn't.

Apparently there are two screens that should be cleaned, one in the power steering reservoir and another down below it, a solenoid on the rack.

http://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls400/343856-all-in-one-power-steering-fix-s-solenoid-acv-plug-drain -flush-bleed-system-diy.html

I know it is for a LS400 but they should be the same, clean them before rebuild.

Rob,

I have rebuilt two pumps in the last 8 months. I just bought the kit from Steering Rebuilds Australia(on ebay - about $40 odd). It doesn't come with a bearing, but I got one from the local auto parts store for $6.

The rebuild is very easy, and I had never done one before. I googled and found a rebuild tutorial on either ALSC, SC or one of the Supra type forums.

Thanks David,
I can now argue that 04446-24010 is NOT the only
number for this kit when negotiating with a buyer.

From all I see this is basically a bearing and a seal kit, but is that going to cure a typical whiny power steering pump, would this normally be wear in the vanes and requires a new pump?

maybe the whine is the bearing.

It is an easy job, kits are on ebay for under $20. Bearings are about $10, so it is a cheap fix.

The vanes in mine showed no wear, although i only put the kit in because it was out whilst doing the timing belt etc.( no leaks or noise)

One of mine whined so I did the bearing with the seal kit. Fixed both the cavitation and the whining issues.

The second had a minor leak but no whine. I just did the seals in that one and it is all good.

I am inclined to agree with Tom - I think the whine is generally the bearing.

Soooo, found out that ULTRA TUNE has all the info needed on soarers - and are a franchise kind of thing - so there are many stores around VIC.
Unsure if they are elsewhere.

Apparently they can work on Soarers and know what they are doing.
Prices seem reasonable also from memory.

Have not been there yet - so I have no idea if they really DO know what they are doing - but that's a heads up anyway.
Ultra tune.
