Hi people.

No idea where to post this - so i've made a new thread (try not to ban me again...)

New issue:
Noticed streaks of dark stuff appearing out of fuel lid (not cap) weekly (usually after refueling and washing car).
These streaks will appear from Lid to rear bumper/exhaust area.
These streaks are dried by the time i notice them, and are a dark brownish/grey colour.

-Been keeping an eye on it from this week-
You see, I'm unsure if those streaks are dirt n dust n crud from inside the fuel lid as i never wash inside the lid before getting a car wash and filling car up due to forgetting, or what not - or if it is in fact fuel leaking. In saying that, no car i have owned has ever had this issue with a dirty inner fuel lid as such. Open the lid in the Soarer and it is mucky/dirty in there though.
Bit of black crud and so on under the tube...

Nothing seems to be leaking from the restrictor, tube,or anywhere else. My cap seems to be in good working order. When i get back home, I have streaks however.

Yesterday - filled up - put injector cleaner in (it's a con, i know) and spilt around 10ml upon putting it in... Now - I'm unsure if the streaks when i got home were caused by this liquid seeping out and collecting dust, or if it was fuel. I didn't wash the car you see.
The streaks this time, appeared be caused by much more than 10ml of liquid spilt inside the lid... (was more like someone threw a mcdonalds coke at the car).
So yeah... Gonna clean the inside of the lid later and hope for the best next week...

Anyway,
So took the Soarer to local mechanic today and he said
"Fuel cap looks good - restrictors rarely leak - and yours looks fine" (as there was no leak when i got there).
When i got back home i noticed a slight ring of liquid where the rubber grommet touches the fuel tube - so it's leaked out through cap or something slightly in the meantime whilst driving home.
The liquid stinks like petrol. However, there were no streaks on the car when i got home this time...

At the shop he said it's possibly fuel vapor from a corroded rubber line or something, but would charge $200 or so minimum to drop tank and check it out - if that's even the issue. (waste of cash/runaround).

Is it likely that I do have the wrong fuel cap? It looks the same as another 3 soarer fuel caps i've seen - but i've read that sometimes on compliance they give you an identical looking toyota fuelcap, but is infact wrong. Thread might be too long or what not...
My cap clicks 3+ times. O-ring looks great. You can wiggle cap a little once on...
Tested a 2nd cap at wreckers today - exact same fit, with the same wiggle feature.

If someone could show me a pic of their GENUINE v8 soarer fuel cap (not something given after compliance or similar) - that'd be great.
I'd be after a pic of the top, and the thread.

I have no idea what can cause this reflux of fuel or whatever it is causing streaks down my fuel lid...

I'm 80% sure it is fuel - but will know for sure next week when i clean the inside of fuel lid before getting a car wash.
Think of this post as a preemptive strike if you will.

Any links or info much appreciated.
Will update thread as the week passes.
(might even clean lid tomorrow and see if streaks re-occur. As mentioned, pretty sure it's fuel.)

(this is the post that got me curious -

So basically, if that was too long to read here is the low-down.

1. What makes fuel/vapor rise and leak out of the lid all over my car?

2. How to fix?

Would it really be that hard to go out there with a bucket of soapy water and a brush, and clean out the filler?

It would have taken you less time that typing the long post and may well have helped you answer the problem.

Basic diagnostics is to do your best to clearly identify the actual problem as the first step.

At the moment you have "used" a lot of your time, the mechanics time and possibly our time and there isn't really a good starting point.

So how about you wash it out first, possibly try another cap and then see what is happening.

We have had very similar issues with 2 of our soarers.

1 was fixed by the replacing the whole tank filler tube ie including the tank restrictor and the other by removing the whole filler tube and having the filler tube and restrictor brazed together.

4 years later the problems have not reoccurred.

Hi Steve, and Dave!

Thanks for the replies.
Turned out to be the fuel filler restrictor.
I made another post detailing how i fixed it.

Thanks :-)
