Is it hard to fix? Is it like the serpentine belt undo tension and move or is it full on?

They sometimes run better at tickover with a tooth out , if its retarded that is . but miss at higher revs

get a pce of cardboard for a straight edge and align it along the centre of each rotor, it should be on the mark. as suggested above, pull it around 1 tooth and see how far the alignment moves.

The marking lines up to the "T" that goes across not the stalk/center of the arm.

The rotor lines up when I put the crank here. How many teeth out is this. It felt like 4 or 5. This can't be right though can it? So with the crank here the rotor on the drivers side is now here.

Back on TDC (crank turned twice around clockwise only). This is passenger side. Just can't tell if its out or not. Its close. If I turn the crank a bit it looks like it's more centered. |

The rubber caps slot into the cover. I don't know how necessary they are. This link may help. http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/timingbelt.html I did my belt a year ago with no problems at all. Compress the tensioner in a vise and hold in place with a nail or allen key. The lines on the belt should all line up and keep the slack on the tensioner side.

If I turn the crank a bit it looks like it's more centered. Think you have answered the question !! Scott ALL THREE HAVE TO BE BANG ON THE MARKS, if not its out.

To me it looks like passenger side is one tooth out and drivers side out by a load. Am I right or is passenger side look OK?

Yep they said they would do it again. I sent the pics. He had a bad week and he took full responsibility for it. He's good like that. But I wanted to have proof that it wasn't ignition system related. Thanks to the blokes on this thread that helped me out with it.

Hi Scott, Good to hear that the Mechanic is going to fix it for you .. I would wait until he has fixed it & then ask him for a discount / compensation on the initial job as you have invested a lot of time trying to work out what the issue was, that it turn's out was something they had caused .. Also I never asked you what the exhaust note at idle sounded like Now, as I know I have seen / heard 4 cyl Alfa Romeo boxer engines with a cam a tooth out & it creates a odd beat at the exhaust note, which is easy to pick after you have heard one, if you could make a mental note or even record the note before & after I would be interested to hear it .. Regards .. Rob ..

Nah sounds the same and mine is pretty loud so I can hear it. But starting it cold it is lumpy idle due to the miss. Then as it gets warmer idle returns to normal.

All according which side of the cam mark is out ,one side would have the inlets and ex on that bank opening a shade to soon and late if the mark was out the other side . as long as it does not pink, or run hot all should be fine till it gets fixed tomorrow .

On a side note the 1jz vvti when the vvti solidnoid starts playing up the car sounds like it has huge cams at idle. I bought it like this and suspected it jumped a tooth or something worse had happened to it. It was also totally gutless once warm and it was idling like this. This was easy to diagnose because it had the problem after timing belt was done and not just randomly. Can't wait to get it back running as it should.
