Scott, looks like both sides are out this time- read all the info twice that you have been given, plus the tute I sent you, do it yourself and give yourself plenty of time to do the job, it is not difficult if you have reasonable skills, but is time consuming. Last thing, ask for a refund from your mechanic, he has not got a clue re Toyota V8's my 2cents worth

agree with john, it is out, get your money back, and go elsewhere. Ask on here , there may be someone near you to help out. It is not difficult, but after releasing the tensioner, you must pull the engine around a couple of times and recheck. If it is not correct, it is easy to redo at this point, just release the tensioner and re adjust. It is time consuming if you do not check at this point.

The passenger side looks OK to me? Does the drivers look to be in the same place as before or slightly better? It looked 2 teeth out before and now its just one tooth out.

The mechanic says that he is sure that its on the right spot says they checked it 4 times and got a few people to look at it. He thinks I'm looking at it wrong.

1) Is it possible to go anti clockwise on the harmonic balance so that I get a bit of slack and then jump a tooth with the slack I've got? 2) Is it possible to just reach the tensioner without undoing anything else or taking the rad out. Loose. The tensioner move the belt and tighten it back up? 3) What steps can be taken out? Obviously eater pump doesn't get touch I'm guessing harmonic balancer doesn't need to come off and the pulleys?

| Scott, this may work ,but i have never done it. the tensioner is the long tube bottom left if you undo the two bolts it will pop out and will not be pushing on the wheel , it may be possible to move the belt up a tooth . You will have to compress the tensioner and push a holding pin in it to replace it.

Hi Scott, it doesn't look to good but you also need to check it with a short ruler or something reasonably strong & Dead straight & Not a cable tie !! & you need to find the centre line of the rotor button & run it across to the mark, as if you are not running through the centre of the rotor button when you are checking it the reading will be inaccurate & give you a false reading, or go from the notch with the white mark on the pulley straight across to the mark on the plastic rear cover & there should be a notch on the back of the cam pulley too that is directly in line with the notch on the front of the pulley & so you know you are going directly back & not veering off at an angle & actually these are the marks you should be using as they are the proper timing marks, but it wont hurt as an exercise using both reference points as in the rotor button & the notch in the cam pulley to the rear cover white mark, so that way you have 2 confirmations points / marks By turning the motor in reverse direction it wont create any slack in the belt to help you as the tensioner holds load on the belt .. If you decide to do it, you will need to take the radiator out & as Dave has posted you might get away with doing it without puling off the harmonic balancer & very bottom cover, but removing the holding pin on the tensioner after re-fitting it I think will be concealed due to the bottom cover hiding the pin Roughly what area do you live in ??

I can see its out. Not the best the old cable tie but its just for your reference. Had someone else have a look when the rotor covers were on and the marks show up one tooth out on drivers side. I'm in Melbourne in the east burbs. I am happy to travel (within a reasonable distance) if someone can help me out. I was hoping to just take the splash tray off find the tensioner loosen it move the can clockwise a bit put the tensioner back on. Maybe I'm dreaming here.

I think its possible to put the tensioner back as long as you start the threads first with the pin sticking out between the two faces , then pull the pin and use the bolts to compress it back into situ.

ask the mechanic to explain how he lines everything up, and also ask if after "setting the tensioner, he pulls the engine around a couple of times and rechecks. bring the mechanic to your house and show him it is still not correct. If he will not correct it, get your money back.

If its still definitely out which you say it is, I would contact him & say you want Full re-imbursement for the labour he charged you the first time & then either do it your self or take it somewhere else & get them to do It & if he says he will fix it again I would basically tell him that you don't trust him to do the job & that you will report him to the ombudsmen / fair trade or what ever if he doesn't repay you ..

Really hope it's not coming from the water pump. There is a grommet that needs to be put in isn't there? I don't think it comes with the pump so I never supplied it and I doubt they did. Also if I push on the hose water leaks from the thermostat housing. What is missing here? A seal or something?

when you take it back, be there when they 1st pull the covers off and get them to line up TDC and together look at the rotor alignment. Everyone should agree it is NOT correct! Before they reassemble, and after the tensioner is released, ask to see the alignment, and everyone should agree it is correct. pull the engine around a couple of times and recheck and agree.
