Hi All
Driving back from airport, car had been parked for a week, without any warning car just started pouring out serious smoke from exhaust. I had to stop it and get it towed home.
I'm interstate again and wasn't able to get a mechanic to have a look yet. Engine has 150k kms with no modifications and is daily driver.

Hi Tom, it only started running rough intermittently and then the smoke poured ou, I was lucky to make it out of M5 tunnel as I thought something internally must of let go. Seemed to be plenty of power so not sure if running on just 4 and I don't think the cat light came on

i would start it up and let it run to see if it is running on 4 cylinders. 90% of the time it is the coil on the passenger side, just above the A/C compressor. plenty on ebay, or supercheap etc.
If you have a multi meter, the primary (the 2 pins on the plug) should read 0 ohms.from the primary to the secondary (ht output) should read ~12.5k ohms

If its blue smoke that is generally oil so dip your stick and check the level, then look around for obvious oil leaks. Next up get a compression test to see if its blow by past worn rings.

I'm back on weekend however the oil level was OK and no apparent leaks
My basic knowledge is blue smoke = burnt oil, black smoke = unburnt fuel, so I'm assuming it must be a ring or valve guide as it doesn't blow smoke @ idle

Blue smoke is normally oil being burnt, but i would be very surprised if a ring or valve guide is stuffed, Also they would not give an intermittent problem, it would be there all the time, and would be unlikely to "just happen."

You just don't hear about that happening to a 1uz. In my old Hilux which had a 1uz, the cooling system was far below par. It over heated more times then I can count. This is definitely poor practice and should be addressed. However, I had no burning oil or unusual engine problems. Very strong motor. Everyone told me that being an alloy motor overheating would destroy it. That usually comes from a lack of knowledge of the 1uz. It's possible to have ring failure but very unlikely.

hi greg depending on how dextrous you are and what tools you use and how you do it (i.e. what you take off) about 30-45 minutes one trick i've done is to mount the passenger side coil backwards in the bracket so it sits out gets more airflow around it

Update, just back from interstate and viewing it in daylight it is blowing white smoke not blue, very strong smell of petrol and no visible oil leaks, running rough but still idles. I've ordered 2 x Coil Packs, $82 via Ebay and will have them fitted while I'm away next week. Toyota OEM are $225 each !! Fingers crossed this fixes it

Greg, little story. I picked up a cheap 31, 18 months ago. Same symptoms. Owner was driving it to get a pink slip, started running rough, blowing smoke. His mechanic couldn't work it out, thought it was broken rings. Got quickly worse, owner couldn't even get it home. Was using about 1 litre of fuel a minute, blowing it unburnt out the exhaust. This Jan I recapped the ecu while on holidays. 8 of the 11 Electros were leaking, 1 was open circuit. Now runs perfect. Worth considering.

Update: The coils have been replaced however it is still blowing some white smoke and a strong smell of petrol but not running rough and idling fine. I'm interstate so just relaying the mechanics comments.
I'm thinking that it's ECU, I've got a spare one and will try that when I get back on weekend.
