Hey guys when I start up my 32 it idles very rough whilst making a grinding noise Replaced coil pack Changed plugs New alternator New belt I checked all the pulleys and they seem fine no wobbling etc I removed the belt and ran the car noise still grinding I thought it was AC pump stuck on but does it run without the belt? Any ideas what it could be?

I can't tell you if it's safe to drive or not. I can tell you that the 1uz is very durable and pretty much bullet proof. Unless you are running it without oil. What might help is to post up a video on youtube of the sound. I'm sure if you went into a dozen mechanic workshops and asked that question they would all respond with 'I can't say much without seeing it first'. A decent video with the sound would be a good start. My guess would be that you will need to do another timing belt job.

Any chance it is the main hydraulic pump? Bad if it is.

Could be a dizzy rotor breaking up (they do this)

then have a look at the distributor rotors as this would cause bad idle as well as the grind.

Hmmm. So hard to pin point with out a good look. Remove the hydro pump belt to see if its that stops the noise, if not, it's somewhere else. Could be the power steering vane at the back of the active pump. But it could also be a really bad idler bearing, two make up the base of the 32 belt assembly, and theres 2 more for the other belt. Like the others said check the distributor and rotor, 10 minute job to get the covers off to see what they're looking like.

have you checked the power steering fluid level. Mine made a grind when the fluid dropped with a leak in the hose. could be a simple fluid top up ?

So wait, you removed the belt and the noise went away? If thats the case it's probably the pump failing or a bad bearing This is not good as rebuild kits aren't available, custom parts need to be made when it comes to seals etc.

They're quite hard to remove due to the hydraulic lines and their location. I'd recommend a hoist to get proper access to remove it from below.

Would possibly a power steering hose leak cause this issue? Every day seem to lose half the fluid and its the big hose under the fluid container

Yeh mate, sounded similar (although hard to define from a youtube clip) I had to replace the pump. In saying that, i had the grind back and a big pool of fluid again. Topped up the res and it went away. So yes, pump died, and perhaps due to a hose. This darn leak has been a prob for a while. I'll keep you posted, but I went through all the same troubleshooting as you and it was the PS pump and hoses. I think its a small sneaky leak in the hose somewhere as they are under great pressure and may be a slow leak as the system de-pressurises itself post driving. I bought one locally, so i'll try and find the supplier for you.
