Running a bit rich.
Sorry for the length of this post- just trying to list the full history to avoid any questions I've already tried and if anything else that might be relevant. The rebadged SC400 LTD has over 330K on the clock.
The car's been left unregistered for a few years with a leaking radiator. When I ran it for short periods I could feel a slight miss so added some injector cleaner to the tank. Got the coolant set up and ran it for about 15 min and got the charging bong. The rectifiers in the alternator were changed. No immediate change. Ran it around the block to check other things and couldn't quite believe the fuel measure on the digital dash dropping so quickly. Gave the motor a pressure wash before taking it in for a blue slip - that resulted in 3 plugs - 6,7 &8- being drowned and not firing. Still ran but with as much power as a slug on valium. Maybe running on about 3 cylinders. The leads looked original - that clear plastic tape/winding still in place.
Looked at the ecu issues raised elsewhere and changed the caps with Panasonic Series F caps. The boards were spotless with no indication of capacitor leak anywhere. No change. Strikes me that none of the posts with this issue indicated indicated such incredible consumption.
I will be checking by looking at the plugs and disconnecting injectors individual for any changes today.
I can't use the EMV for error codes as I took it out to fix up the display with the capacitor change. When I refitted it the a/c and audio were not showing so I've taken it out again to change caps in the piggy back control unit behind the display.
Seems obvious that 1 or more injectors are stuck wide open either electronically or mechanically.
Anyone out there have any ideas?

Retract the last about stuck injectors.
Disconnected all but 4 & 6 injectors individually with the same drop in revs and increased roughness in result for each. Therefore 6 cylinders at least are igniting with spark and an air fuel charge that will burn - even though it is super rich.
Next step will be to change the oxygen sensors. I was planning to do that anyway as I have seen a post somewhere about going from 1 wire to a 3 wire pre-heated sensor. Most of my driving will be short distances which will not give the original sensors time to heat up. Any guidance on generic units available would be good. Would the sensors from a Landcruiser 2UZ be close? Will pull one out tomorrow for an eBay search.

I have two brand new heated ones I bought from the USA which I didn't use.
Will work out a price if keen

Sounds interesting. There is a fair bit of guess work about which generic one on eBay will do the job. Send me a pm as to what you would like for them.

Got some hassles here with a dodgy, commercial wrecker. Time to vent.
I thought that the ECU was the problem so I bought relevant Panasonic Series F caps. Opened up the unit and found that the board was clean. To make sure, I changed the caps. Refitted it and no difference. So I managed to find a wrecker who had one. Directly stated 'These ECU's are well known for capacitor failure. Can we be certain yours is good?'
I bin them if there a don't need the come back bullshit a bud'.
Got the unit and opened it to check the caps 3 or 4 totally rooted with some board damage. Sent a text with photos showing the damage. 3 days later no response. Tested the unit and it went into fluctuating 1200 to 2400rpm. Typical. Finally there was a response. Hopefully I can get a refund through PayPal.
'That was a good work ECU you have a loom damage most likely that what has damage your ECU and now that ECU a bud'.If not I will be spreading his name as far and loudly as I can
'I removed it from a running car'
'You have open the ECU without Consulting me First. .you know you should have made contact with me before you opened it'
Spent most of the day tapping away to try for a refund. Left it for the day and started a PayPal dispute. Takes me a lot to get wound up but he got me there with all his bullshit. The guy has a lot of parts on Gumtree so I'm tempted to out the guy on there and Soarer forums.

seems like the typical responce " it came from a working car" Don't they all say that, thinking it could be a well known Soarer wrecker you dealt with maybe... if its the person i am thinking of they have had run ins with people here before.

I suspect I know who it is too. I bought parts off him via bank deposit because he seemed alright. I haven't got the parts, haven't got a refund and all of a sudden he can't answer my calls or texts. I'll go down to NSW and shove the parts up his ass soon. Wrecking is a mugs game, no empathy required.

If you consider north to be up and south to be down, you could look a bit closer. This one's near Brisbane. Not to sure I**wich suburb it is....
I will push with PayPal as far as I can - don't like my chances there. when I have taken that as far as I can I will out him.
As to the ECU, I'm pretty sure I can repair the tracks and change the caps. I will then video installation of the part and starting the motor, sell it as a working unit and try and recover my money. I've already done the caps in mine and as long as I can confirm that it is the Oxygen sensors I can sell it with full confidence.
I've already fixed the backlight problem on my EMV with cap replacement - A/C and audio settings aren't showing so I'm doing the piggy back comp on the unit next.
This car is definitely a learning curve - a long way from carburetors and distributors. These forums are a great support.

Ah now I know exactly who it is. I've been to his place, all the cars are complete wrecks. None of them would be running.

Don't give up, Soarers can be very reliable cars if maintained correctly. I recently picked up a UZZ31 that had done 348,000kms from a guy who had it for 15years, the alternator had died and it had been sitting for months. I put a new alternator in it, connected the battery, turned the key and it started first go then drove 400kms to get home and it didn't skip a beat. Since then i've replaced the thermostat as the temp was sitting to low and that's about it.

There's plenty of info around on soarer central and the other older forums on issues and fixes.

This one's always started first go when the guy I got it off jump started it to move it-unless it was reverse polarity on the first try. As a result the alternator died 15 minutes after I replaced the radiator, filled it with coolant and let it idle. That was my first boing!!

Also brake accumulator- did the lathe, o-ring, recharge.
The back light on the EMV was flickering as well. Fixed that with caps and refitted.
That brought to light the fact that A/C and audio controls weren't showing.
Disconnected the little control unit in the boot telling me that a tail light globe was out when it wasn't.
It has the compliance plate but no paperwork to go with it. Luckily I know a lady at the Registry, she spent 1 & 1/2 hours talking to the mechanic, technical in the RMS all so I will be able to get a blue slip. If not I'll need an engineers report.
That's when I ran out of petrol and got into this chase.
Once I have a blue slip I will be doing timing belt kit, plugs, leads (even though it has 300k on the clock they look original!).
As you all know, I could go on with all the things to be done now before it's on the road. I keep on researching on the forums for any thing that might need doing.

Right now I am in shock.
The wrecker in question just offered full reimbursement. Does that ever happen?

'Hello Bruce,
How does one reimburse you ??
'It appears you did not get my previous message . ***** has a very good name in used parts you are his first and will be his only one . all ECU will be opened photographed ,fitted to a running Vehicle ,removed then Sealed . we hope you get your Issues sorted if you were Closer ***** would assist you . As I said he has a good name not only in Parts supply but also in assisting people . ( very rare in this day and Age .)'

I did write about 4000 words and 3 photos to get this result, but it apparently worked.

Yeah.
In those words, I reinforced the fact that all capacitors in all Toyota control units of that era are suss. Suggested that he get the caps done before he sells them.
Certainly got my $300 worth out of the forums today.
Mmm that will pay for the plugs and leads, what else could I do?
