I have had a fuel smell at the rear of my car for years and have never been able to figure out the reason. I have done the carbon canister clean thing, with no noticable change and recently changed the canister out but still have the smell at the fuel tank filler point. I have changed out the filler cap and the big "o" ring is in good condition.
My car did not get that special reducer put in the fill hole at the time of import clearance checks, so there is not gap and need for resealing of that part as I don't have one.

Can anyone help with some experience of the same problem but who has solved it?
Thanks for feedback.

Make sure the tap points on the bottom of the tank are not leaking. Mine was leaking from the large washer that seals the pump output and the return line near the dif. Needed to replace the large rubber washers.

I just replaced mine too, fuel smell under rear wheel arch. Was easier with the rear cradle out, especially on a 32.
Just ordered some thru Toyota. 3x77171-30030 + 1×90430-12245 available in Au.

The small return tube sometimes fracture in the boot and cause a smell, the fix is to add a piece of rubber flex hose in the centre of it and solder up the fracture. also some cars had the wrong fuel cap fitted and they didn;t seat properly , put some grease on the O ring on the cap and screw it down , then take it off and make sure it has seated properly.

My tap point rubbers (those big rubber washers that go at the bottom of the tank for take off points) seem fine, no weeping. The thin tube in the boot that is some kind of breather/overflow tube seems fine. I tightened all those little 8 mil bolts/screws up on the tank sender unit, the fill pipe plate and the entry plate for the thin tube and eventually found 2 things that were causing my fuel smell at the filler cap.

1.The LPG installer had put a rubber sealer (purely aesthetic value) round the filler neck after modifying the filler to fit both the LPG fill point and the petrol fill point. This rubber was on a slight angle and was sitting too high on one side to allow the filler cap to screw down fully. I cut the rubber off and it is all fixed. I also fitted a better fitting cap, Aunger brand, with a 3 point star shape as the grip point to tighten it, rather than a straight bar like other Soarer filler caps. It screws down very tight.

2. I had a cap that did not have as many threads on it as the proper one. It did not screw down very tight, so I put this new cap on that also had a longer threaded section.

Would like to suggest the fuel smell could be due to the restrictor coming loose on the fuel filler neck.
When cars arrive here they are fitted with an Aussie restrictor so you do not put wrong fuel in.

The putty eventually wears down and causes leaks out the fuel filler neck, and fumes into cabin.

My friend had this problem last year and sealed the neck filler again with radiator/fuel putty. No more fuel smell.

If you notice any smudges, or leaks, or marks coming out of your fuel flap, it is likely to be the filler necks restrictor coming loose.

This post on this very forum also seems to have fixed the problem, take a look.

Nathan, are you trolling us? The original post clearly says that his car never had a restrictor put in it.

Right. Sorry.

People have been known to be wrong before.
Adding to this, if it has no restrictor, what kind of cap is being used? Is it sealing?

G'day John,

The ole' fuel smell annoyance (I'm sure there's a Maxwell Smart joke in there somewhere for us older guys). My Soarer was perfect (no smell) before i embarked on the big upgrade project. The shop pulled out the tank with the many upgrades going in, and i had a huge fuel smell problem when i got the car back.It was ridiculous. The car stunk of fuel and actually scared me for a bit, as i knew the cabin was full of fumes so was extremely dangerous.

I systematically went through every possible point except the tap points (Jan and Tim, do you have any pics, and more info, as this was the only place i haven't investigated ?), including even importing a complete new filler pipe to tank from the US, replacing every gasket except 1 which is no longer available (fuel level sensor gasket). The E85 upgrade was the catalyst for this nightmare. The Twin massive Walbros also upped the pressure and associated vacuum in the system which was also a contributor. I also had to swap to a float fuel level sensor from a POV pack, as the E85 tripped the electronic sensor madly, giving an incorrect fuel dash reading. This is the only gasket i haven't replaced. i'm also tending to think that the POV Pack Sensor surround and gasket may be minutely different in size to the electronic one ?? anyone know ?

Have you swapped out the fuel pump/pumps?

In removing the tank i think one/many/all the older gaskets each developed a lack of seal so i replaced the lot. Every time i get in now, i think there's still a hint of smell,i think partly because the fuel smell sank into the interior and that i've missed one gasket and now perhaps the tap points ?? (or just pure doubt....is that fuel i can smell??)

My wife doesn't like getting in the car due to its power now, but she jumped in last week and didn't notice any smell, of which i was delighted....so perhaps just my old paranoia.

The problem is there's so many points that the fuel can leak (even mildly) that its a complete process of elimination that took me the best part of 18 months.

I have every gasket number here if any one is interested, and even the complete fuel filler pipe to tank part number, fuel cap and gasket numbers. its been a B#tch of a job doing them one by one, but it seemed the only way. (Yep we even did the fuel sniffer and UV (ultraviolet light)testing and couldn't find the leak).

I know a guy that has this equipment if you'd like to try the sniffer and UV trick.... if it is an obvious one, this will pick it up immediately. The only problem is he's in Wollongong/Sydney, so not that much use to you. Perhaps someone local could help you there. Such a test doesn't cost much, as its done very quickly, with both engine on and off(fuel pump on/off) (rear seat out, inspection plate off, boot interior out). Same again, if you'd like his number for a chat, he's a great bloke and may give you the handy hints on the check and the required equipment. This may be the best, fastest and cheapest way to begin....my path has been the longest and most annoying possible.

BTW, even after doing all the gaskets, they took time to bed in and seal properly, so patience is still required even after doing the seals. So its kind of do one, wait, air out and see, then move on again. I'm sorry to hear you're going through this as it had be perplexed and p*ssed off for a very long time.

I'm sure in the future i'll face more problems as E85 has a tendency to slowly eat any kind of seal.Everything else is braided lines and metal apart from the tank seals now.

Drop me a note if i can help any more.

that is some journey Mark!!
My long term issue of fuel smell has never entered the car, only when I get out after a run but now no problems. All ok. No smell.

Hi Mark, I have decided to move both the Soarers on And have reduced the prices asking $6500 for the supercharge V8 and $10,500 for the amazing 1J . If you know anyone who is after a good deal you could tell them about the cars. The V8 is on car sales And the 1J is on gumtree. Cheers John
