Okay, this is the first time this has ever happened, only ever did it once and it scared me.

I hadn't run my car in about 2 days, started it last night, and moved it into the shed (it was on for about 40 seconds?)

The next morning, I start it, make a funny screech sound as she kicked over, and ran real lumpy between 300rpm and 1500rpm heaps of smoke came out of the exhausts for about a minute. I gave it a little rev to about 2500rpm and it spluttered and moaned and then it started to idle normally, smoke disappeared and all fine since.

I know it isn't much, but the smoke stank and was rather blue, it sounded unhealthy as all hell!

Any ideas? Anything I should check? Car has about 53,000k on it, still drives fine with no other symptoms, should I just not worry about it?

sounds like valve stem seals. the reason it was lump is because the oil and your car had to burn it off first before it would run smoothly

David,
mine is similar when starting from cold.
Puff off smoke and a strong fuel smell.
Can also take a lot longer to eventually start.
It's just fueling up too much before it finally starts.
Someone here will know what it is.
The poor idle is just the mixture too rich till the excess fuel burns off.
If it was oil, you would have white smoke.

David.....I had exactly the same thing and if it's the same as mine it'll be fine mate. With mine I had the car in the driveway and gave it a wash, then left it in the driveway. Later that night I started it and drove it the 10 metres or so to put it in the garage. Didn't drive it the following day but the morning after that went to start it and had exactly what you described.

What happened was the car was over-fueled. Because it was only driven the short distance and particularly as it was cold, the car was running mega-rich for such a short period and then was immediately shut down. When I started it again two days later, first thing in the morning and in the cold. The car again, was trying to fuel itself up, exagerating the problem. Once it was driven for a little while everything settled back to normal and it hasn't been a problem since.

Sorry I can't provide the exact technical details. I'm not exactly mechanically minded but Neil Griffiths explained it to me and assured me it was no great drama. It happens quite regularly in cases like mechanics and car yards etc where they just start the cars, move them short distances and immediately shut them down.

If it's the same problem as mine, take the car for a bit of a run and you'll find after it starts to warm up and it's cleared the excess fuel it'll settle right down and behave itself.

I just had the exact same thing happen!!
Washed her saturday (took about 3 hours), then put her away, all fine. Went to go out Sunday, bad noise on start-up then lots of Blue smoke. Turned her off after about 30 seconds, and decided to cry. I was thinking Valve stem seals, valves, or rings. But this thread has cheered me up a little. Am still going to take the day off and take her into my mechanic, that is if she keeps blowing smoke. Also, since the drags, she's been leaking coolant, suspect one of the back heater hoses, only leaking about a quarter ltr a week.

OK, started her up, no smoke and no extra noises!! I still think I'll get her service moved forward 2000k and I need to reset the ecu (have been practising stalling her up at lights). OH, and I don't think I'll ever run her down the quarter again! Besides, as far as I can find out, my second run was a record 60' for a stock 92 V8, and my last 3 runs I got 0.0 reaction times!
I think I proved to myself exactly what I wanted to prove.
