My mate has got a 2 1/2 inch cat back with cannons. It's loud but sounds very, very nice. It would have to be close the legal limit though.

I have cannons on 2 1/4" twin cats back, but with resonators in the middle.

Quiet at idle and cruising, but loud (probably still not illegal), and a very nice note, when under load.

Still deciding whether to take out the resonators to make it a little louder.

i know of a certain V8 soarer that was tested at 86db with headers, 3 inch cats 2 1/4 pipes and STOCK mufflers.

if you have exhaust work AND Cannons, it will be extremely illegal.

imagine driving around like that all day... bloody hoons!

If you like the style and want minimum resistance to flow then go for it! just remember to flange both the canons and your stock mufflers so you can switch betwwen teh two for special outings to the EPA

Ewww, Cannon style exhaust are the worst types Possible for a soarer - they look very cheap and have a blatty sound.

I Find it extremely sad to see a soarer with one or two of them, as it just totally ruins the rear look of the car! :-( Makes it just like every other cheaply modified Jap car around town.

Only oval box style mufflers look the best, and sound the best for that matter! With oval tips of course. :-)

I was advised that too big a system on the end of a V8 means it loses low down torque, that some back pressure is actually a good thing -any comments?

Agreed also, for my older soarer I planed on a 2.5" dual system but discovered 2.25" dual was the best. Unfortuanetly never got around to it as I stupidly sold it.. (

Ian, I have 1x3" resonator up front at the join, 2 1/2" right up to 2x 'Mercury' oval mufflers at the rear. Nice sound, but a little too loud with open throttle so I have just had two more ovals fitted in between. Still has a great sound, but is much better when coming up the mountain where I live.

Hey Haydn,

I'm considering getting 2 of those twins you got in that pic there. How are they for sound, you have them on a 2.5TT yes?
I dont want it illegal, but i do want a little noise, as getting in the car and starting it doesn't get the blood pumping much with stocko mufflers :\ Not to mention you just get laughed at at the lights when you try and egg someone on :P

Also Im told the stockos flow crap.

I don't agree ..... I am on exhaust system #4 and we can debate this topic technically all day - I suggest you all go prove or disprove it to yourself - go disconnect your exhaust system as close to the manifold as your can and go for a drive. I've had 4 different exhaust systems on my V8 and I have driven it with just 4/1 headers. The design of your manifold is critical and will have a huge effect on performance. My comments are noted in the exhaust system section.

As for Cannons - I'm not a fan, but each to his own.

they sound good dave! well on my car they do ,guess it depends what you have in front of the mufflers as well, there is two hotdogs as well on mine, make sure you modify the bar if you do cause it will look crap without doing it .

If you are looking for the flow and the tone of a Cannon but don’t want it to drone like one, you have a few options depending how quiet you want it.

Essentially your best bet if you want it nice and quiet when cruising is to get a set of Oval Bodied mufflers as well as some good oval bodied resonators to back it up.

The oval bodied mufflers have a lot more volume of packing in them around the core pipe. This means they have more capacity to absorb sound than the cannons (which have a much thinner layer of packing around the core due to their dimensions) but still have the same core pipe dimensions and flow.

In my honest opinion the oval bodies also look a hell of a lot more elegant under the soarer than cannons, but again that’s personal taste.

The above theory also applies to resonators, there are a few more options in this department, being:

• Oval bodied – Best sound/drone absorption by far, most expensive, hardest to mount under the car depending how your pipes sit.

• Round bodied – better sound absorption than a hot dog but not as good at cutting out the drone as a good oval body.

• Hot-Dog – similar to the round body but usually only a thin wrap of fibreglass around the core pipe to cut the edge off the exhaust tone, will probably still tend to drone on some systems (but then some systems seem to go fine with hot dogs)

• Nothing – this places all of the muffling and all of the resonation deadening work solely on the muffler. Again, depending on the system, sometimes you wont get drone without a resonator fitted, but most times you will, or it will just be loud.

I usually advise that people fit resonators to their system when buying a straight through muffler as although the mufflers will cut out a good chunk of the volume the resonators seem to do a great job at cutting out resonance/drone in the cabin (which is what really drives you nuts).

I have a pair of oval bodied mufflers (
STO-SR-2540) and oval bodied resonators on my setup and you actually can hardly hear the thing idle and it’s very quiet on the highway, but when you put your foot down it lets out a great tone that only a straight through system can give.

Haydn’s DTC-SD-2540’s are the neatest installation I have seen on a set of them yet. The soarer with its round recess for the exhaust tips tends to look better with a round tip, I have seen a few others with dual tips that sit slightly lower than a round tip muffler would and although it still looks quite good they really look best if the rear bumper has a wider recess (or a custom cut one like Haydn’s) to snugly mount the tips in.

Hope that helps,

Cheers.
