i'm getting a loud clunking when selecting reverse gear,it sounds like its pretty much directly below the shifter area but outside the car obviously. I have replaced the passenger side engine mount as it was totally in two peices, the drivers side one is also like this but i've not had time to replace it yet. while the car was on a ramp a few weeks ago we had a good look at the transmission mount and it looked to be in good condition.what else can it be?? its only doing it selecting reverse, not drive. any ideas??

it's your bushes, replace them all under the car for about 500-700 dollars, i had that exact same clunk everytime i put it in reverse...now no probs :D

well ive now changed both engine mounts and the clunk is still there. is EXACTLY the same clunk as i get when i stab the throttle on and off rapidly at say 40mph. it makes a noise like the exhaust hitting something but its definately not that as there is ample clearance around everything and obviously when selecting reverse the engine is pretty much stationary. i know there are the 3 donut rubbers on the propshaft, should these be my next port of call and how easy are they to change, compared to say the engine mount? thanks.

Not common, common Stewart, but with your buggered engine mounts & stuff, it would have put a lot of extra loading on the center bearing. It would be worth checking to ensure that the center bearing hanger mounting bolts arn't loose. AND, I'd be inclined to pull the trans mount out for inspection, as they can APPEAR to be ok, when in reality they're torn (Specialy since your engine mounts were well rooted).
I don't think it'll be your "Doughnut" couplings, as they are pretty hardy little sausages, and they cost heaps from Mr.T...........something like $300(AUD) + each!!!!.

ive now seen pictures of good and bad trans mounts and mine is dead for sure, useless mechanic lol! so that is next on the list.good point about the extra stress on the bearing im also getting some vibration in the car now since changing the second engine mount so i think thats pointing to the fact the rear mount is stuffed. how easy is it to change? its easy to get at but does the transmission need to go up or down to change it out? thanks!

Well Stewart, I haven't needed to do one yet, but I would suggest loosening ALL nuts on the mount, then support the trans on a piece of handy timber, blocks, whatever, then drop the cross member down from the body, remove old mount, clean 15 years of accumulated crap offa the cross member, fit NEW mount to cross member (or transmission) which ever takes ya fancy, refit cross member to the car, remove transmission support blocks, allow transmission to settle on the new mount, and tighten all nuts/bolts etc.

what is the oil spec for the rear dif? i noticed when it was on the ramp that one of the shafts is slightly damp so maybe the fluid is a little low.sounds like a plan to change it anyway ;)

if you drop the line presure from the auto trans this will reduce maybee remove your clunk with no money spent. Raising the line presure gives a harder shift but adds clunk to d - r and visa versa

the one i have highlited in the picture? it already seems pretty slack with the engine off, when you say reduce the pressure i am presuming you mean add more slack to the cable? thanks.
