| Hi Guys, can anyone tell me where to buy a radiator reservoir for my 92 V8 (UZZ31). See pic below. Are there any second hand ones out there or can I get a new one from Toyota? Cheers

Hi Fred, and to SC. The tanks are available NEW from Toyota for around the $330 mark, or you could try for a 2nd. hand one, but of course it'll be getting on a bit, so may not last long. Given the immaculate condition of your Soarer, I'd be opting for NEW, which'l last another 15 years or so. If you want to email me at bagnall@xtra.co.nz with ALL the info off your Toyota data plate (under the bonnet), I will be able to give you the EXACT part number to ask for

Hi Fred, I just got my V8 Radiator Reservoir replaced by a new one last month by S&LC and cost $290. Just like Don say, its better get a new one than a second hand.

fred, it might just be that you need to seal around the sender unit which from that photo at least, is where the leak appears to be. Not sure if there is an actual seal or not, our resident parts guru might be able to help there

I suspect these tanks crack where they do because of the way they're mounted. Their only support is near the PS fluid reservoir and at the front right. At the back, where you're going to push down on the rad cap as you remove it, there's no support, consequently pushing down flexes the tank on a line from one mount across to the other. Checkout where they break - it's always somewhere along that line. My advice - when you remove your radiator cap, support the underside of the tank, under the cap neck, with your other hand. Best option would be to redesign the mount to support the back of the tank under all circumstances - you wouldn't then have the long (front to back) unsupported part of the tank acting as a lever to twist the front of the tank up or down whenever you hit a decent bump.

Peter you’re right, it leaks around the sender unit, but there is also a pin hole leak just to the right of the sender. I tried to seal these up but there is too much pressure. I’ll go for the brand new option as recommended. Thanks Mate

Fred, I highly recommend that you check to make sure the sensor is working as well after you replace it. I had mine replaced earlier this year and it happened to kill the sensor as well (not that it mattered to me since my old mechanic forgot to plug the damn thing back in when he replaced the tank). Also, if you've been running it for a while with the tank leaking, I suggest getting the rest of the radiator checked out as well, especially the top tank. After I had the bubble/reservoir tank done on mine, it brought the pressure back to normal, which then split the radiator top-tank (which was rusted from not having enough water in it because the reservoir tank was split).

Also, if you get a new tank, you should hold on the old one. I believe that there was someone in Brisbane who was looking for a old bubble tank to look into making aluminium copies of it. I don't remember who off the top of my head, Lew knows I think.

Mine was cracked and I patched it around the sensor unit with 2 part epoxy putty. The dry strip kind you twist together that is recommended for repairing fuel tanks and radiators. That was 3 years ago and it is still going strong.

Peter, you may find that there could be cracks emanating up from the sensor barrel on the inside that will by-pass the o-ring. In time these then radiate out from the top.

Yep, could be, but I figure for $3.35 it's worth a shot

| Fixed it! In the end the old tank was not damaged and only needed a new O-Ring. (Thanks Don!) But swopped over to a new tank anyway. Will be selling the old tank if anyone wants it.

I replaced the O-ring and thoroughly cleaned out both the socket where it screws back in and the threads etc on the sender unit. It's only been 5 days but I have done two blats through the hills and it's looking good! The old O-ring actually looks OK, so it might have just been crud in the threads or it may yet still leak over time.

Dave, the cracks you mention, are they actually on the sender unit and not the tank?

No Peter, I meant on the tank inside of the part that the sender screws into, the female part so to speak.

| OK, that means the black part that forms the lid of the tank. I have another old one here, looking at it, I can see the cracks you refer to.

Some 'Flawfinder' penetrant may show up those finer cracks.
