I just got the car back from getting the Rush headers and super sweet exhaust system on today. Now the problem is the ticking noise I had (always assumed it was the shims) has gotten even louder! 
Now from my understanding this shouldn't have happened. Does anyone else have any experience with this? It's really pretty loud and can be heard in the cabin and sounds pretty bad on the outside.
A Couple of questions:
- Anyone had any experience with this when fitting headers?
- Is is possible that it could be Piston Slap or something else?
- Is there a good place in SA to get it fixed?
- Is there somewhere else I can call, figure I could use some advice?
Anyone lend me a hand or impart some knowledge? |

Yeah saw Steve the other day and he wants me to sink like $3k into "finding out the problem" and stuff.
Basically I got told it was a "huge job" and the feeling it's not really worth his time doing it.
So yeah back to the drawing board.
I'll be hella pissed if it's Piston Slap. |

Would it really have gotten louder when fitting the headers though? |

the extractors will change the sound you hear under the bonnet.
it could be possible to make other sounds more pronounced then thay were before. |

It definitely sounds like they are drawing out the sound now, where as before it was pretty muffled by the shockingly small old headers.
Something I guess I'll have to live with until I can find somewhere to get it fixed I suppose. |

Open up the throttle a bit while listening. If you hear ticking at idle with the bonet open, it's probably the injectors open and closing.
Put a screw driver on the fuel rail and put your ear on the end of the screw driver. It's crude but it works. |

Had it checked and it's not the injectors. it's too loud to be now.
It has to be the buckets and shim that need replacing. Just like Neil said it's probably them. So I now have to find somewhere in SA to do it... VIC/NSW if need be. |

Make sure the headers are decently sealed and bolted on to the engine correctly. I remember on other cars I've had when the headers are unbolted you can hear a very loud tapping |

It's come down quite a bit with an oil change and now the system is burnt in (2000kms). So it has to be shims... :-( |

No one has any idea's about where to get it done in SA? Figure I'll leave Manta alone, don't think he wants the work, which is fair enough.
Hmmm, Maybe Peter Scott would be interested with my help... There'd be some nice shiny $1K and a slab of beer to drink while we do it. (yes I'd help) |

Any decent mechanic should be able to do it.
Maybe print out those pages from planetsoarer and take to a mechanic.
It looks fiddly, but not too bad. If I were in adelaide I could give you a hand.

instead of using a screwdriver, you can pick up a cheap mechanics stethoscope on ebay for about $25.
i don't know much about the construction of the v8s, but assuming you can get the probe close to the rocker assembly and injectors, you should be able to nail it down well. |
