A couple of points.
As I understand it, you will still lose some points, but not lose the entire question as long as it's still readable and the actual question is answered.
Some abbreviations have become part of the language, mainly due to the Internet eg lol, wtf, ftw and so on.
We accept a lot of that here too.
However, regardless of how much the NZ government has to compromise in the hope that someone will actually pass an exam, I will still be taking a tough stance against SMS-speak on Soarer Central.
It may well be that SC will end up being the only forum that actively discourages SMS-speak, but I am sure there will still be enough people that take pride in their presentation to keep the forum alive.
Soarer Central, an island of sanity in a degrading world of gibberish.

Well, I say step it up a notch, Peter. I'm so sick of seeing stupid spelling and grammatical errors in posts. People, it's about time to learn the difference between BRAKES and BREAKS. This is a car forum, for christ's sake (And I omit the capital for 'Christ' deliberately)! The other main ones that piss me off are THERE, THEIR and THEY'RE, as well as ITS and IT'S. This is year 3 English, it's not difficult. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't read and write the English language, DO NOT participate in an English-language forum.
EDIT: I forgot the other main offender - YOUR and YOU'RE (and occasionally YAW). 2nd EDIT: And another one - MUST HAVE, not MUST OF. It really gets on my nerves when people say MUST OF. The correct expression is MUST HAVE, which is why the contracted form is MUST'VE. Whether or not that is a valid and correct contraction is another debate.
SMS speak so does not speed up anything, it takes longer to type it (coz u gotta figure it out how to abbreviate it) and takes longer to read it too... at least for me. Besides, I bet I can kick any teen's ass in typing an SMS, they can do it their old fashioned way, I just turn on predictive text input on mine and I'm done! So much quicker that way anyway...

Daniel, I feel the same way, old fashioned I guess. I very rarely use any SMS abbreviations in SMS'; it really just doesn't appeal to me.
However my girlfriends best friend can type SMS speak faster than I would have thought possible. Its like she has developed extra joints in her thumbs!! You have a multi-line response from here before you've finished clearing your last message. Freaky stuff.
As for SMS speak being allowed in an exam, what an absolute abhorrence. The English language needs a greater focus in schools, not lesser, for gods sake!
One of my greatest pet peeves is the "well, you knew what I meant" response you get from people either spelling words completely wrong (it happens to all people sometimes) or using a word completely out of context. grrrr.
