My fuel pump seems to have packed up (1991 -2.5 TT). Does anyone know if the pump is in the tank itself or is it somewhere near the tank?
The car packed up about a week ago and the RACQ thought it could be the fuel filter as I had let the tank get a bit low (for the first time ever!) but after changing the filter (and getting soaked in petrol in the process) the car still won't start. A neighbour who works on cars tested the electrics and said it looked like the pump itself was stuffed but doesn't have the time to fix it.
When the car first went wrong, the engine would start but only run for a few seconds on extremely low revs (just like almost no fuel was getting through)and when the RACQ bloke squirted fuel directly into the air intake, it ran.
So I need to find where the pump is and try to find a replacement. Can they be rebuilt or would it be better to go for a new one? I've heard that you can use a pump made for this size of car but not actually made for Soarers.

Tref, the pump is in the tank and there are instructions on the forum as to how to get at it - use Search to find them.
The pump can also be replaced with a new Toyota pump, or some after market ones, though these are mainly used when extra fuel is required for high performance modifications.

remove the back seat, access to tank is behind the back rest. virtually any auto electrician or mechanic can replace the pump with a readily available walbro. much cheaper than one from toyota.

I'm up to my neck in building my house at the moment (not subcontacting, actually BUILDING the thing!) so my brain is more frazzled than usual. Is walbro an actual make of pump? Also, how do I check the operation of the fuel pump ecu? I'm having trouble looking up previous posts because i'm on the town's library computer and either they restrict what can be viewed (which means 'jelly wrestlin girls' is out)or the computer's stuffed.

Joe- yes I may well be interested. I just need to find out which of these are stuffed on my car. I'm up to my eyes in roofing steel, cyclone rods and all sorts of other unworldly things I previously never knew existed (I'm doing the owner builder thing God help me). So I'll get back to you once I've five minutes to find out. We would then need to see what the freight would be to Qld. Watch this space.

ok I didn't have a paperclip (and wasn't going to buy a box of em just for this test) so had to make do with a piece of wire. Anyway, I poked said wire into the plus B and fp terminals and cranked over the engine....bugger. No it didn't start so I'm now presuming it's the fuel pump. I see Joe has a standard pump for sale. Joe, what's the total if you send it to me in darkest Queensland? Anyone-any ideas how much a new (non toyota if it's cheaper) fuel pump would cost? I need my wheels back as thumping around town in my campervan is seriously damaging my street cred. Help!
