Had a call just now from a Soarer driver I know (V8 Ltd). He appears to have some binding on one rear brake. He noticed a bit of a smell from the brake after a run up to Newcastle two days ago and when leaving town today found that it was getting worse.
Obvious symptoms are that, after tracking through a small town, the car will show vibration from that rear wheel and a buildup of heat. It disappears after a few hundred metres but the more he used the brakes the worse the problem became, with smoke rising from the wheel. Currently he is holed up in a Singleton hotel (towed back from the Putty road) waiting to take it to a brake place in the morning.
Does anyone have any suggestions which would point the brake place in the right direction or help to make sure they are not sold a pup on required work? Any thoughts will be passed on tonight.

In the worst case, presumably he could take that caliper out of the circuit (I am told it can be done fairly easily) and drive back safely enough. It is a rear one so braking would not be much diminished while the ABS would look after lockup on the remaining wheel. What do you think?

I replaced the rear rotors on that car prior to selling it to Ashley. On the vertical face where the wheelstud holes are , there is another small hole with a rubber grommet in it. I had a sticking RR brake after fitting them and as it turned out the grommet had to be aligned with a recess in the axle stub, I threw away the grommet from the RR rotor and no more trouble. After speaking to Ashley tonight, his problem is in the LR rotor and prior to travelling , he had braided brake lines fitted to the car, unsure whether the rotors were removed, but if they were the grommet is probably the culprit again. Cheers

I heard that you had been in touch with them John. Thanks for that. I have written to Neil and [EDIT] he has replied. The rotors have not been removed so we will see what the brake place comes up with.

is this a dark blue soarer? I've seen a few around this dump (singleton) lately. If he is here over the weekend and needs any help drop me a message and I'll see if I can be of assistance.

Thanks Ben. It is pearl white. Look up Ashely Garnett's profile. Most of the year Ash lives in Newcastle where he goes to Uni. He was travelling back to Canberra where his family lives, after taking some stuff up there. We hope and expect that they will be on the road tomorrow but if things are worse then I will let them know. Thanks again for your offer.

The wrap-up:
Not surprisingly, it was a seized brake piston. The brake shop could not remove it readily to do a temporary fix and (new) braided steel brake hoses meant they could not be clamped off easily to allow a slow trip home on three brakes. Besides, it had to be fixed anyway.
We found Brad at the Toyshop in Newcastle. The boys hired an X-Trail and tootled down there to pick up a caliper kit which the Singleton brake place installed, and were back on the road by about 3, all at a reasonable cost.
Thanks to all who contributed and who offered help, and to those who just stopped to read and think about it a bit. This is the real point and value of this forum

Well, made it back to the ACT just in time to catch the last two overs of the cricket . Would like to say a big thanks for everybody's contributions in solving the problem so quickly. This was the source of the problem:
Just a quick question, in order to get the other three checked, do I need to get seal kits for each corner or is it just a simple matter of getting them looked at?
Thanks to everybody again
