hey guys, picked up my new soarer a week ago and the brakes are really squeaky when i press down slightly. its only when you lightly press on the brakes, and it goes away when you push harder.
he said he'd just replaced the brake pads too. the discs look clean as well.
any ideas?

Possibly didn't replace the anti-squeal shims at the time.

When we bought our Soarer, the previous owner had fitted Bendix front pads, and we got EXACTLY the same................light pressure = horrendous squealing, more pressure = near silence.

Initially fixed by getting the stick-on anti-squeal stuff you buy in a sheet and trim to size for each pad. MUCH better, but not perfect.
Final solution, fitted Standard Toyota front pads with new stick-on anti-squeal stuff.
Result = TOTAL silence at ANY degree of application.

really - id never heard of the stick on stuff. i'll ask around.
also - having never removed brakes before, is it easy to remove the caliper to paint it?
i'll have to bleed the brakes won't I? pardon my lack of knowledge!

Tom, just remove the wheel and you will find you have enough space to paint. I have just done exactly that with no problems getting into every little nook with a small brush.

I still have the compliance fitted pads in mine, which are probably Bendix. Will replace with TRD or Lucas soon, but if you pull the pads out, and give them a light rub on a sheet of emery paper to take off the glazed surface, it fixes the squeal.

Do you still use the old shims when you use the stick-on anti-squeal stuff, or do you just throw them out?

Read a message from Alan tan regarding noise when depressing the brake pedal. I also have a noise. It is NOT the pump. This sounds like as though you have your finger at the end of a bicycle pump and forcing the air out. This only happens when the brake is depressed, even lightly. Also appears to be worse on colder days. any thoughts or experience of who to contact ?

If you don't have TRC then your brake booster is vacuum operated. "Psssht psssht". Normally it's pretty quiet, but that might depend how fussy you are or there could be a reason why it is noisy, eg a leak.

Something to try, run the car, turn it off, press the pedal a few times, the noise should stop once the vacuum has been exhausted.

Doesn't help you a lot other than to work out the source of the noise.

Tried this with the engine off but ignition on. No noise. God only knows why. I guess you have this also. I thought it best to to describe it as a fart sound...
Yes it s annoying me.

The squeak is more than likely the piston in the accumulator moving up/down in which case you'll need a new one - $400.
