A few weeks ago the brake fluid dash warning came up on my dash in yellow and also an ! exclamation mark was displayed. From this alert I then discovered that my front brake hose burst and I then had them both replaced.

Now..

The problem is the warning message is still displayed more regularly and is now red. The brakes seem and feel fine, the fluid level is full and no loss of brake fluid is evident. The warning will flash only when I am coming to a stop or slowing for a car in front through traffic. The warning doesn't flash when I am driving at normal speed limits or braking hard.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Add more fluid (a few mm ABOVE the max level indicator).

Thanks Adam. I'll give that a go.

Another thing, I have been using DOT 3 brake fluid as this is what it states to use on the filler cap. Would a DOT 4 fluid be fine to use? Cheers. Pat.

NO. Never mix brake fluids! It's cheap and easily available from most servos. Just buy some Dot 3 (assuming the previous owner/importer used that).

Cheers. I would never mix the two, but thought that maybe DOT 4 would be better to use in the future. I would have bled the brakes and replaced with DOT 4 fluid. I will just stick to DOT 3.

Seeing as it's hard to really know what is in them, why not do a full flush with DOT 4?

That's what I had originally planned Peter. It would be nice to know what exactly is in there for peace of mind. I just want to sort out this dash warning first.

The dash warning is almost 100% certain to just need a little more brake fluid. It's a common issue.
