Recently the brake fluid warning came up so I checked the level and it was below the MAX indicator so I topped it up to be just over it. Then a couple days later I saw a leak on the ground under the car and popped the bonnet to see that it was overflowing and leaking from the brake fluid cap. Took some fluid out, it was still over the MAX indicator by a fair way and now today the warning came on again and the level was about half way between MAX and MIN. Any ideas to why this would be happening?

There was also a small tutorial a while back about a problem like this. Basically the 'dipstick' that goes into the reservoir contains the sensor for the fluid level as well. The sensor itself was filling with brake fluid and causing a bad reading. Not sure exactly where about the tutorial is but the tutorial section would be a good place to start.

I'll have a look but its not the reading which was my concern but the fluctuating reservoir levels. The sensor seems to be working fine it only comes on when it goes below the MAX level.

Mick...after leaving your car all night, in the morning the level will be high in the master cyl , now just turn ign on ..you will hear pump buzzing and your level will fall this is ok..but as you can see if it was topped up at this point it would overflow by morning.so top up after its been standing for a few hours....do you hear the pump going a lot when brakeing?..DR

Ok I topped it up after I had been driving and it was giving me the warning message. Yeah I hear the pump going when I start it but I will have to listen to it when I'm driving and braking.

Michael..as Pete says it depends on your definition..so turn on wait till the pump stops and time how long before it comes on again? then do this ..wait till it stops again ..now how many pumps of the brake pedal before it cuts in again.

Dave, I turned it on and wait for over five minutes and it didn't come on. Then I pumped the pedal and found that every 2nd time I pushed it the pump would come on.

Michael..that looks fine , mines a 97 and checks out the same also tried another late v8 same..! so it looks like its the sensor ? try topping it up after 30 pumps of the pedal (IGN OFF) .good luck DR
