Good Afternoon all,

After surfing the net using most of my precious work time (well it is not that precious and surfing the net much more preferable to working anyways) I stumbled across this awesome site dedicated to the car I love that unfortunetly is sitting in my friends garage due to lack of brakes!!!
The problem I have is the small cylinder (the master cylinder I have been advised by a mechanic) is stuffed -was making whiring noises etc... before finally giving out -luckly I was not driving when the brakes died. Anyways after a bit of looking around I could not find a second hand dealer and the Toyota Dealership advised a $2,000 replacement part- as the whole assembly needs replacing.
Any ideas or places in East Melbourne where Second hand parts may be available? Would like to fix asap as I do not want the car sitting gathering dust!!!

Thanks

P.S. Site is awesome!!!

To be honest mate they are hard to come by and are expensive, i had to get mine replaced...i was lucky i found one whole unit from Just Japs in NSW for $410...i told my Soarer Mechanic and he said thats the cheapest one his even seen get sold, plus it was in good nick. He said the usually sell for $700 or more for a 2nd hand unit.

Id suggest ringing Just Japs in NSW and see if they have any front half cuts with TRC or ring around your local Jap wreckers and find out if they have any front cuts with TRC so you can get The whole unit out of it.

P.S welcome to the Soarer Club

Just Japs Ph: 02 9545 0532 ask for Darren (i think)

Hi Simon and welcome to this great site.
Can't the master cylinder be removed, machined out, sleeved with stainless steel and re-kitted. It's not cheap though probably a few hundred bucks.

Welcome Simon.

Sounds like the electric pump on a TRC version master cylinder. As fas as I know, other things can go wrong with that pump, eg filters clogged, hoses come off etc. Might be best to get it checked out by someone that knows the technology.

In Melbourne, Sports & Luxury Cars would be a good place to try.

I remember Neil Griffiths mentioning in a post recently that the TRC brake assembly could be repaired by someone in Sydney (I think) I cant remember the post so maybe a search or contact Neil for details, good luck.

Pretty much any pump can make a noise. Sometimes it can be caused by the mounting isolation deteriorating allowing the pump noise to transmit to the body.

Pete, pardon my ignorance but just how does the system work? Whats the pump for? What does it pump - brake fluid or air?

Confused.

Alan, my car doesn't have one, but as I understand it, the pump makes air pressure to drive the power assistance for the master cylinder. If the pump fails, you still have brakes, but they are very hard to push.

Normal cars use a vacuum booster for the power assistance.

That is how it started with mine and then got more and more frequent. I did a diagnostic and it came up with open or short circuit within the unit.

yeah do you guys get a squeaky noise happen when you brake??? if so from what i have heard there is no repair and eventually will stop working.

If you guys find someone who repairs the whole unit please post it up here so i can let my Mechanic know cause he gets a couple soarers here and there with the same problem and hasnt found anyone to repair them.

Mine's squeaking all the time and the ABS/TRC booster pump is running more than it should to maintain hydraulic pressure. Maybe the squeak is the sound of fluid leaking back to the pump suction. I know mine's getting worse.

Which explains the pumping noise when I start the car and the periodic pumping when I use the brakes. It also explains the pressure pot next to the master cylinder with the dire warnings not to fiddle with it.

Thanks Pete - have a beer on me.

I'm waiting on Castle Hill Toyota to come back with prices on new parts or I may be able to make one decent ABS/TRC unit out of the two I've got.
Wheels or tits and it's money money money.
