Hi all,

Picked up my 1997 3.0 non vvti yesterday.. nice car but it has a slight issue. When I brake, a wobble/shudder comes through the steering wheel. The wobble seems to be there a little in normal driving but definitely accentuated in braking.
The car has 18" multifit rims but as you would guess it, no spacer (spigot rings) which is something I intend to source and fit asap.

So from anyone elses experience, do you think this is just a wheel balancing issue or do I need new rotors? Or could it be something else?

Does anyone know where I can get the correct spigot rings from?

Thanks

Emille

Definitely get the spigot rings before you do anything else. Before I fitted my rings there was a slight vibration through the speed range.

Any wheel supply shop should be able to source them for you, worst case scenario measure the wheel and hub and get something turned up by a local engineer.

Matt.

vvti from what I have read came in august 1997 :-)

I was worried about the same thing but the chassis # definitely lines up with the 1997 ones

If after sorting some spigot rings it is still there ...might just be a disc regrind.

So there are non VVTi facelift models around?

I was looking at a JZZ30 facelift model when I got my JZZ31 3 years ago, it was a late '96 model from memory, had the factory body kit, but was $5k more expensive than the car I ended up buying, and showing signs of being thrashed. Maybe the JZZ30 got the facelift earlier than the JZZ31?

Mine is a JZZ31 :-)

From everything I have read, the VVTI 2JZ came out in August 1997 which means mine must be before that.

I put the wheel locator rings on thursday night with no difference.

Just got a wheel balance and alignment today, the problem has been reduced whilst driving, especially at freeway speeds but definitely still there when braking so I am going to replace the rotors. I know they might just need a skim, but if I skim them and the problem is still there then the money is wasted..

Thinking about getting DBA rotors, from what I can see the part number is 586. Does anyone know rough pricing for these?

Thanks for the tip mate, why do you recommend RDA over DBA?

Ok fair call, I suppose the pros should be able to work out if the discs are too far gone anyway. I will compare the prices of skimming and new rotors if the difference is large, I will just get a skim to start with.

Another update on this: Today I was driving my car in the afternoon and the temperature was cold but not really cold and I noticed that at higher speeds 60km/h+ the shudder was really noticeable. Then tonight, I was driving home and it was quite cold outside and at 100km/h the shudder was almost non existent except when braking.

Try swapping your front and rear wheels to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for the tip Peter.
I think the tyre dude possibly did this. I got all 4 wheels balanced and a front and rear alignment. He said he put the best two tyres on the front.

Maybe, though if you tend to use the throttle much, the two best tyres would have been on the front to start with.

If you get vibration when not using the brakes, then a wheel or tyre might be not quite round - it happens.

Though they should have picked something like that up when they were balancing it.

Yes, a bit weird hey. I wonder why, perhaps it wasn't made in time for the update. It did go in a few later lexus models. Anyway the 2JZ-GE vvti came alot later than the 1JZ-GTE vvti.

Emille if your plates are 1CHN 944 or 1CQJ 790 (97 Platinum blue, black interior, bought from dalkeithish area) I know your car.

Nearly bought it for gf but didnt because it wasnt vvti. Anyway it was a good buy and very nice car. Congratulations. Nice rims.

Your car is identical to mine minus rims and black interior

Anyway if it is the car I am thinking of I have photos you may not have I can email you. Come to a cruise I would love to see it in the flesh.

That is a good point Peter - the wheels could well be buckled. I intend replacing them anyway as I would like a different style.

Josh, yes, mine is the 1CQJ one - not blue though?? It is silver (unless that is the name of the silver colour)

Yeah I thought it was a good buy too, very minor blemishes which I intend to get worked out but other than that, all pretty straight.
It was a shame about no VVTI but my old car was a 94 TX5 V6 so even the non vvti 2jz has more poke, besides, I ride an R1 for performance, the car is there for when I do not want to get wet or feel too lazy to kit up for the bike!

Yeah thats what I meant silverish blue.

Good price for what it was especially with black interior. My last car was a 94 black on black JZZ31 with the non vvti 2jz and I just didnt want to go through that engine again so I didnt get it. But its a very nice car. Post up some pics when you get a chance.

Well as I had a JZZ31, when I get another car I want another experience from it, not the same ride, performance etc.

Nothing wrong with it, my jzz31 was an absolute gem. Never had any problems with it especially compared to my currenr 1JZ. Performance was falcommodore beating but not exhilarating.

I am keen to drive a 2JZ-GE vvti to see how much it is improved so I was real interested in your car but when I heard non vvti I just thought I couldn't be stuffed getting a car with an engine I have already had.

If you ever want to make $, I'll swap my spruce interior with your black, cos damn do I miss black interior. How many k's has it done Emille

Ahh fair call Joshua,

Hehe i like the black interior too, it was one of the things that sold me on the car. the car had 94000kms on it.
