Hello all,

I bought my soarer about 9 months ago, and the brakes have always be woeful on them. At first, a leaking master cylinder was thought to be the problem.

Having replaced the master cylinder, along with pads and giving the system a very thorough bleeding, the brakes seem to be a lot better.

However, stepping into any other car (even a tarago) the brakes still seem quite hopeless, so while the car does slow down... It is not what I call confidence in braking.

I was hoping if there was any soarer owners in the area that I could compare braking performance with. I have a suspicion the booster might be at fault but I don't want to change it if the brakes are already performing optimally.

Thanks all,

What pads did you use?

You could test the booster on an empty road, by going slowly, selecting neutral, turning the engine off, touching the brakes several times lightly and see how the pedal feel and braking changes as the booster runs out. Keep in mind that your power steering will go and the car will feel as heavy as a bucket of lead.

Be confident that your car will re-start so you get brakes and power steering back though.

This is not something you do when there is any other traffic around.

I'm using toyota pads.
Will try your test, what am I looking for specifically?

If the booster isn't doing anything, then it won't make any difference when it stops working.

if your brakes work fine, but just don't feel as good as you want, then try some Lucas pads, they have more bite and make the car feel a lot lighter under brakes.

Dixon,

I have the same problem as you. I can tell you that from driving other soarers the brakes should be more responsive and less firm. If you want to test the booster, pump the brake pedal will the car is turned off and it gets hard. While leaving your foot on the pedal turn on the car and you will feel the booster kick in.

Like you i replaced what i thought was a faulty booster and leaking master. I am performing a brake upgrade shortly and will flush the entire system and see if there is any improvement.

That IS very BAD advise.

NEVER turn a frucking car off while in motion.FFS

Blokes,
Fix the front calipers slide pins, and you may find all will be well.

Neil, when your refering to the slide pins, do you mean the top one?

Would the local toyota dealer carry the pins for the soarer? Or is it 'order from japan, x weeks' like everything else?

I "drove" my Soarer for close to 10k's with no engine when I ran out of fuel on the way back from Geelong. Just got to the start of the downhill run on the freeway into Adelaide, when it stopped. I got all the way down, and then along Cross Roads but got stopped by the Duthy Street traffic lights. :-(

The fun part was making it look easy so my wife didn't panic. :-)

But I agree it's not a brilliant idea, it is survivable, more so under controlled conditions.

I am pretty sure I am not the only one that has done it either.

Dixon,
It is mainly the top ones that seize ( Sometimes you can get them loose )

Easiest option is to just find GOOD used MOUNTING brackets with pins that move.

Checked the calipers today, both slide pins able to move freely and free of damage...

Possibility of it being the brake booster being the main culprit?

Have you checked the brake lines or thought about changing over to stainless steel lines??
