The sensor has a magnetic switch in the column behind the float. As you can see, the float doesn't move up or down much (6mm)and inside the float is a magnet. If you hold the sensor up to your ear and move the float up you should be able to hear a slight 'click'. That 'click' is the switch closing.

So if your brake fluid levels drop too low, it clicks the switch and even if you fill it, you will still get errors until you reset it as you described?
