G'day,

Whilst sitting at the lights the other day, I noticed that the pressure under my foot from the brake pedal was gone. So I pushed a little further, and a second or two later, it was gone again. I was able to get the pedal to the floor eventually.

When the pedal is released, it comes back up again and regains pressure. The fluid level in the reservoir is not going down, and I can't see any brake fluid under the car.

This symbolises an internal leak in the master cylinder - the fluid is getting past the piston or similar. Has anyone had this problem before, and if so, is it a simple fix through buying a replacement part, or should I just replace the whole master cylinder with a second hand item? Or could the ABS have something to do with this?

Without being an expert in brake systems.

Id say be very careful and get yourself a rebuild kit. Rebuild that sucker and get it right. Perhaps even take it to someone that knows what there doing. the last thing you want is brake failure while driving.

Yeah, I'd tend to recommend not pissing around with it yourself, take it to an expert. I've always been quite happy to mess around rebuilding hydraulic clutch systems, and once refreshed two drum brake slave cylinders, which fortunately worked out OK (considering I had very little idea what I was doing), but my advice when it comes to brakes other than the basics I'd leave it to the experts.

If you pump the brake pedal quickly and often then you'll be using up the pressure quicker than the booster pump can replace it and get the ABS alarm. If there's no external leaks then the fluid must still be in the system, most likely transferred into the accumulator which will be indicative of a lack of nitrogen in said accumulator so get yourselves a new one.

Yeah sounds like you got creep and it is where the secondary seal leaks under light application. It will stop car if you apply the brakes hard. If you can get the parts for it rebuild it. I dont recomend you get a second hand because you dont know if it has the same problem or how long it will last.

Sounds like you may need new seal kits after you check the caliper pistons for corrosion and pitting.

With old brake fluid, water builds up and corrodes the mild steel pistons. I got my seal kits and had a new piston imported through Castle Hill Toyota - not expensive.

Hope this helps.
