Received my Ferodo DS2500 racing pads today and they are missing the little holes that i clip the anti squeal spring thingo into...

is this spring mandatory? I will be putting the toyota pads back in when i get home from the track, but do they need to be there when i am at the track?

should i just drill these with a fine drill bit and a high speed drill (one of the advantages to having two fitters & turners in the family).

pic of the holes i am talking about attached (stolen from
http://soarer.ace.net.au/brake_pads.html , thanks pen).

Neil drilled mine so I could use the springs, but I don't think they are really needed, especially if you only use them for track days.

Also, just read over this nice short tutorial on changing brake fluid, but doesnt mention how much i need (pretty sure 4L is overkill):
http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/37/63.html

how much brake fluid is needed for a complete change?

well... i didnt get to the track, looks like some tool in the past had overtightened the nipple to bleed my brakes, and upon undoing the nipple a little bit of my caliper broke off where the nipple screws into the caliper...

needless to say i am not looking for a second hand passenger side caliper here:

Oi Paul, Is it possible to Helicoil/Recoil/Timesert the damaged thread? Most competent mechanical/engineering workshops should be capable of performing such a repair!

[ps. the thread is usually M8 x 1.0mm Pitch]

Steve, what happens is that part of the calliper and thread chips away completely, nothing left to rethread.

Paul/Pen, is it possible to post a pic of the problem area?

May well be a desirable visual warning to over-exuberant DIY'ers.

Is there any possibility of a quality weld/repair job? are the calipers cast iron or aluminium?

I have two fitter & turners/boilermakers in the family so the suggestion has already been made to try milling it down, boring out a new recess and then rethreading it.

but to rebore it down we are worried it may actually bore into the piston cylinder and the angle on the internal cone of the recess needs to exactly match the cone on the end of the nipple for it to seal (apparently). not impossible, just time consuming (apparently they need to grind a drill bit to the right angle after they have milled the surface smooth.

Not worth the messing around if you can get a s/h one easily enough.

When mine broke I just went down to Cresta Wreckers and go another caliper for $100. Not worth stuffing around!!
