I have had my GZ20 (1GGEU) for a year now.
At Christmas 2006 she had a 1JZ-GTE 4Spd Auto dropped in. Had a few troubles so I thought I could post a thread here seeking help on every little upset that happens to it, and also for other conversion owners to post here too.

1. How can i overcome the speedo problem. It's reading only 25% of my actual speed. ie im doing 60km/h and the speedo reads 15km/h (approx).

2. What are the best boost levels for a) the engine, and b) the stock twin turbos.

3. any advice on what to replace, look for, clean, etc etc would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not too cluey on mechanics, but i am learning. I love the GZ20 and i've heard that the ol' 1JZ is better than the RB series of engines. (well, it beats the pants off my old 73rwkw 1GGEU) haha.

Thanks guys (and girls if there are any here)

:-)

1. whats the condition of your speedo sensor on the A340E? I got a box recently that had an absolutely f***** speedo sensor. it was cracked and yeah, long story short.. the box got taken back promptly!

2. they can handle 15psi on daily driving reasonably well. why you would want to run that much boost on non-competitive driving is beyond me though.

3. what did you replace on the engine before you did the conversion? did you do it from a straight halfcut cut or engine package?

i'm halfway through this same conversion myself, but yeah i've got a pretty good idea of how its meant to be done..

1. As far as i know, the speedo condition is fine, just need a 4:1 instead of a 1:1 speed sender gear.

2. 15psi for the turbos yeah? and the engine must be high numbers....?

3. not much replaced. timing belt, water pump. Its out of a JZZ30, only done 52,000ks :-) Bought it as a package from SSS Automotive. JZA70 engine would've been so much less of a hassle, but i didn't know they swapped it for a JZZ30 without me knowing apart from them saying its newer and has 60,000 less ks on it.

4. You know where i can aquire a good radiator for the 1JZ? The 1GGEU just doesn't stay cool. A new GA70 one will cost $440, and a PWR 3 core is approx $700, eeek.

a 4:1 instead of a 1:1 gear? that should ring alarm bells right there. 15km/hr reading instead of 60km/hr reading. 1 x 15 = 15 vs 4 x 15 = 60.

did they use a JZZ30 auto box though? or did they use your existing one and change the bellhousing? the torque converters are completely different between the GZ20 A340 and the JZZ30 A340.

radiator, there are plenty of good ones going around. i know of one or two for sale on Toymods (JZA70 and MA70 ones) that are straight bolt ins with slightly bigger inlet/outlet piping for around the $100-$150 mark. secondhand, but yeah even if you get a radiator recondition its still going to work out under $200.

also make sure you have a decent thermofan setup.

JZZ30 donk should still work alright provided you've used all the stuff from the cut (it would have been cheaper for them to put a JZZ30 cut in than a JZA70 cut by the way because JZZ30 autos fetch about $2200 for a halfcut and JZA70 ones fetch $2800ish)

There are 2 types of Toyota speedo senders.

One is a 4pole, one is a 20pole.

If you use the 4 pole where a 20pole should be, your speedo will read about 20% of normal.
If you use a 20 pole where a 4 pole should be, you speedo will read about 500% of normal.

The UZZ30 uses a 4 pole, so I'd say the JZZ30 uses the same.
The MX83 uses a 20pole, so at a guess the GZ20 does as well.

I'd say you have a 4pole sender in there, and you need a 20pole.

Thanks for the speedo help. I'll get around to it one day :-)

As for radiator, I replaced the thermostat the other day, bugger of a spot to put a thermostat!
It heats up, temp gauge goes through the roof, then goes down, jumps around... I think I'm due for a PWR Radiator and to get a compression leak test, also check the temp sensor.

Something is not quite right with the drive train (torque converter maybe). It will rev, I can hear the turbos on low boost, but the power isn't going to the wheels. Then it lunges when the power does go through.... :S

It will get up to scratch one day.

Also, anyone know Z20 or maybe Z30 owners in the Townsville area?

Unfortunately there is no such thing as 'just swapping engines' when it comes to engine conversions.
