Seems to be some argument as to if you need to undo the nut or just unclip it. Consensus was you had to undo the nut but it's lock-tited and painted over so it's very hard to budge.

Most people say that applying a little heat softens up the Locktite and makes everything easier. Use a small blowtorch or even a ciggy lighter, get it hot and then use the spanner.

x 2

Sorry guys but just have no clue. Is there a tutorial somewhere or can someone give me info please?

Do I attack the part that it connects to the boot closest to me or the bit deep in the boot.

How do I attack it? Thanks

Are we talking about the same struts? It literally took me 10 minutes to replace mine.

There is tutorial somewhere but basically...
  • Open the boot and prop it
  • Remove the boot liner to get access to the struts
  • Using a small screwdriver lever the clip which holds the strut to a stud on the chassis (when you see it, it is obvious but hard to explain)
  • Remove the nut on the other end of the strut (12mm iirc)This might need some heat but mine came off easily.
  • Remove strut and replace with new one

Hey Matthew have a bit of respect for people that arent as informed as you or I dude.

Not cool to be calling someone retarded just cos they cant do or figure out something. Also if you noticed he wouldnt have a clue what the hell you are on about with regards to supa cheap as he is in the USA.

Makes me wonder who the retard is now.

But by the name of it I'm sure that place would be more fit for someone of your caliber. oh and before I forget that goes for anybody and everybody that thinks there is something retarded about asking questions. Its a shame that in this day and age their are stil people that immature and self absorbed. I would like to share my motto with all of you,and when you spend most of your time on line these should be words to live by; DON'T TELL SOMEONE ON LINE SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD NOT TELL THEM TO THERE FACE. But unfortunatly not everyone will follow this advice, because the web could be a great place for someone who's words are manifested by a coward. With that said, peace and love to all of those out there that deserve it.

In a follow up to Warren's comments.

If you want to save yourself $20 remove and re-install the struts yourself... these sames guys only charged me $40 for a re-gas. Drove-in drove-out in 20 minutes before work one morning.

One of the things I recall from my brief time in NYC was that nobody had any problems saying anything to anyones face :-) And the great thing was it never deteriorated into a fight like it would in these parts of the world. Its a great city, hopefully I can go back some day.

Well said Anthony!

Also, 95% of the staff at super cheap auto don't know anything about a car, they just sell things off the shelf blindly.

Most intriguing.. I look forward to going there someday. Finally go up the Empire State Building.. sadly not the WTC (obviously), but the new one should be done well by then.

I was there in June 2001 for two weeks only unfortunately. I did go on a bus tour that took us all around the bottom of the WTC but didn't go up. I did go up the Empire State Building which was awesome.

as mike said one side you need to use a 12 or 13mm spanner to take the ball joint off and the other end on the head there is a metal clip. if you take the pressure off the strut and lever the clip outwards and give it a wriggle it should come off the ball joint

Thread Revival!

A brand new pair of gas struts for the boot can be had for $30.50 delivered Australia wide through Gas Strut Guys on eBay.

I bought a pair for my Micra and they were fantastic quality and highly pressurised. I had to hold onto the tailgate on that car as it flung up.

Guess I'll be buying a pair for $30.50 for my new Soarer.

The new struts are a clip on style from the 'Gas Strut Guys' where the original fitment only clip at the one end and the other is a press fit onto a ball which is bolted to the car.

Removal; The ball/bolt end can be levered off while on the car, if this can't be done then using a 12mm spanner remove the bolt/ball end. This will be tight if it is still the original fitment as it is loctited, make sure to use a good quality spanner so not to round the bolt when undoing it. Once off use a claw hammer and lever the bolt/ball from the old strut. The other end clips onto a shaft, using a flat screwdriver lever the clip to bend it up then the strut will slide off the shaft.

Replace; Fit the bolt/ball back to the car then clip on the new strut, repeat for other side and your done. Now you can climb out of the boot. :-)
