I recently passed the IM240 in order to get my engineers report and following some questions from some other members I thought I would share my thoughts.

Disclaimer: I am by no means a qualified mechanic, nor do I have any clue whatsoever, all this information I pulled from somewhere else, so if something breaks... only blame me a little bit.

First of all get your IM240 testing done in Sydney... its free, I've read that in WA people have paid upwards of $2k for an IM240 test (if this is untrue please ignore). However it is usually booked up for at least a month in advance. So book a number of tests each a week apart, that way if you do fail your not waiting a month between tests.

Second, get a test done without any modifications as its free and the test results will indicate what you need to change in order to pass.

Third follow this amazing troubleshooting table from magnaflow.
http://www.car-sound.com/04basics/04charts.asp

HCCONOxPossible Cause or Recommended Action
High High HighReplace converter and O2 sensor;verify tune-up and correct any faults
High Low High Replace converter; tune-up & check lean; AFR; leaking exhaust valves.
Low High High Replace converter and O2 sensor.
High High Low Rich AFR; air injection.
High Low Low Run-in converter; tune-up; oil change.
Low Low High EGR; lean AFR; leaks; run-in converter; use larger converter;
Low High Low O2 sensor; rich AFR.

Low means less than the test fail point; high means near or above the test fail point.

For me, all that was required was a new catalytic converter

Fourth... if all else fails you can take your car to hitman emmissions tuning in penrith who will *pretty much* get you a certificate for $1000 + parts (they will tune, modify and present your car testing for you). It should take them about a week... Though I must warn everyone, I had alot of dramas with them, but they where honest about what was happening and did the right thing in the end. Also they will follow exactly whats recommended in the table, though they do have years of experience behind them...apparently.

Anyway I hope this helps and if I've made any errors (factual, spelling or rehashing an old post) please forgive me.

And when you look at your IM240 test report, you will notice it measures "THC" levels... don't worry you wont get busted for possession.
