If anyone disbelieves my comment about the lens being worth more than the camera, just look up the price of Simon's 70-200, making sure it is the f2.8/L IS.

I have a Canon Ixus40. I am no expert , but I find it does what I want to do, which is basically point and shoot. Also very compact- fits in shirt pocket. I just mounted it on my motor bike, and works perfect for on the move shots. There are so many on the market, it makes it hard to decide.

Amen. I bought a good bolt action for $1300. Doctor scope in 4-20x 50mm cost over $2000. Optics is one thing the chinese cant get a grip on yet. It takes far too much real world data and testing to make optics suitable in the field.

I was lucky to get this monster at a great price.
Only ended up paying $1350, not to bad when it retails at over $2500, which is a tad more than the camera cost!
Although now I keep thinking how fast my car could've gone with nearly $4000 spent on it instead! Then again, the camera gear gets me up close with lots of hotties in swimwear shoots

That's some damn good advice guys, thank you heaps! My current Camera is an Olympus c-5000zoom, it was an excellent little camera, but I'm looking at something a bit beefier in terms of picture quality. Perhaps not as far as a dslr, but something close to that quality for pictures, that has a range of fectures, ie quick picture taking time, movies. That was interesting to hear about duty free not being cheaper than normal shops? I would have never thought of that, I wonder if you can do that claim gst back on other electronic items? Must be more to duty free than just GST surely? I'll check out price difference tho.

From my observation (not authoritative), GST is the only relevant tax on cameras and there is no duty. If you check commonly advertised prices in a camera store they will near-certainly be less than 10% more expensive than the same camera in a duty-free, so buying at the store and claiming is better. This generally holds for anything on which there is no duty and many that do have duty (import tax for local industry protection).
