I do see your point David I just don't like bright lights at night and as you say the adjustment becomes a real issue with these lights.

Yes, and it is true that if you took my argument to the limit then in principle one could put the sun in each light and explain that so long as the adjustment was correct there would be no problem . Pity the person who came in the other direction as you both crossed a crest.

Greg,
i called regency today and the earliest booking is 12/9 at 3pm .... i now have to take the car to a cop shop and have them sign off that the car is 'fixed' so i can drive it up until regency booking. For the regency inspection i need to bring any receipts for repairs and all associated paper work, the inspection will take 40 minutes and they will be going over the whole car, not just the suspension.

what gets me is that the car had to go through regency for compliance. the after market height controller was on the car and it was set a lot lower than it is now (their spec) plus had two stuffed front tires with steel hanging out, the only thing they removed at compliance was the dark rear tint .... now what message are they sending guys?

Minor Defect = $225 fine, 1 demerit point
Major Defect = $300 fine, 3 demerit point

If I remember correctly, this has been effective since early this year.

Sorry, but this is wrong.
The ruling is:

Use vehicle in breach of minor defect notice - $225 1 point
Use vehicle in breach of major defect notice - $300 3 points

Defects themselves do not attract demerit points.

Minor addendum to that last post, defective seat belts, brakes, steering or seating, and protrusions attract fines & demerit points.

Whoops. I've read that wrong.
Sorry for any confusion.

Add to your list excessive noise and smoke.

Yeah, I knew about noise/smoke, but I didn't think that was listed under the "defect" category on the RTA site.

A few points Muzz. You are being a bit vague about the "luxury and well known car make". Do you assert there is a problem with the Lexus? If not wrote on what is your problem with the factory Lexus HIDs? Secondly, "the facts are that they blind other drivers" is an assertion about a particular car and adjustment, not valid as a generalisation. Thirdly:

the statement "why anyone needs such lights goes beyond me" beggars belief. I occasionally drive quickly at night where there are no streetlights and have a lifetime of experience doing so with different cars and lighting systems. Next question?,

I have no problem with any make of lights i just hate a car that stands out and catches your eye in traffic its a distraction.and as the car approaches the light from the HID keeps changing hence why its a distraction.

I never stated anything about factory Lexus Hids.

Btw i am generalising i used BmW and Merc as a general rule of thumb as theye are the pinnacle of factory mainstream cars.my point here is if factory setups like these luxury cars are distracting can you imagine the aftermarket Hid`s out there with all these fancy coloured bulbs in them.

and your statement re driving quickly at night has nothing to do with my concerns regarding the leglity or the discomfort these lights cause other people.btw my high beams are sufficient for spirited night time driving where there is no street lights.

lastly these are my thaughts only dont take it to heart. :-)

Muz, same goes with 4WD cars with normal lights, that's what the LCD rear-view mirror is for :-)

I always turned the day mode on in my LCD rear-view mirror all the time now...

If i dont i cant really see the back at night, as the tinted on the rear window is pretty dark..

well guys just an update on this little saga ... I went through Regency today.

Young guy doing the inspection and he was happy for a chat so i thought you beauty i am off to a good start. he went over the whole car and was surprised by a few things such as turning off the switch in the boot for the TEMS. all went well until he noticed the tint on the drivers and passengers window. legal limit is 30% tint and i had 46%.

the option was to drive away, remove and come back through the bullshit all again or remove there and then. he handed me a razor blade and watched me take it off. The guys who put the tint on told me it was legal and they would not tint below legal limits however Regency felt it was too dark.

They do not have a spec for a 91 soarer suspension height and he said it was strange but nothing he could do about it and had to go off what the cops had written down which was the 94 spec.

anyway i think i got off lightly enough. poor bloke next to me on P plates had his car set too low and brought it in to the inspection with blocks of wood between the springs and the stops, needless to say he would be needing a tow from Regency.

btw dvd player hiding in boot and air sus controller under rear seat.

ummm 46% is LEGAL... 35% and darker is not.. the darker it is the lower the %..

ie 20% allows 20% of light through, 5% allows 5% of light through, hence it is much darker..

The % is light transmitted, so 5% is darker than 35%

The legal limit in all states for rear and sides is 35% except SA where the front sides are supposed to be 75% (almost clear).

Pretty much all SA tinters I have spoken to will fit 35% to the front sides, apparently the police don't get too excited at 35%.

Ben,
Glad to hear you got through first time. I have heard plenty of horror stories of people taking it back 3 or 4 times as the lovely people down there keep finding little extras. the window tint thing is a contentious issue and it looks as though it depends on who you get down there.
