Hey all,

I am moving up to Thursday Island in Far North QLD next year and as such will be buying a boat. Now the bad part is that I will have to sell my 94 TT as it is just too impractical to bring up here, but I would like to get a stock v8, 3l, or tt to replace it with.

So my questions are, can i fit a towball to a soarer? How would it go towing a boat (probably 1t worth) up an down a slippery boat ramp at low tide? Should i just bite the bullet and get a commo :S

Which brings me to the next point, anyone want to buy a 94 TT? Anyone have a stock soarer they want to sell for as close to $5k as possible?

Get a Towbar and stop asking stupid questions.. Geez,lol...

You want to know if a car with almost 380 nm of torque in stock form and over 206kw , Will tow a boat... And then you say you will buy a Commodore.. Which has maybe 280nm and 150kw?

I think i answered it for you :-) If your worried about slipperiness. Get 1 with Traction Control!

lol yeah i guess you're right, i should just stop pussy footing around :-) I think its just that I have never seen a soarer tow anything, so don't relate the two.

Then theres the problem of finding one for around $5k, any money over that i spend comes off my boat budget, and up here i spend a hell of a lot more time on the water then driving.

Any soarer for $5k is gonna cost alot in repairs to get it up to scratch.. AND you need something reliable to be a tow vehicle:-)

And yeah... More $$$ for the boat!

Cheers.

yeah, well i have put just about 5000kms on my current car in 3 years up here, the island is only a couple of kays around, so hopefully there shouldnt be much to go wrong in that time. The only real problem is the dodgy petrol at times and the rust from salt in the air. I know my budget is incredibly low, but there must be a uzz30 in decent knick out there somewhere someone wants to sell, right? Plus it only has to last 2 years till i leave here. There is a guy up here with a white v8 that has been around for a few years, and a jza80 supra, so if they can last the distance i figure 2 years isnt too much to ask is it?

No doubt those cars could last there, but chances are they weren’t 5k specials...

Honestly you would be hard pressed to find one in decent nick for 5k, expect it to have a rough body/interior and unknown mechanicals. But if your willing to wait long enough I’m sure you could find a bargain.
If your only doing 1600km or so a year putting around the island, I’d just get a 96-98 Commo/Falcon for 3-5k.

Mine was $5k, and it's pretty much up to scratch, has some paint issues, but mechanically, electroniclly, and structurally is great :-)

But having said that, I got an awesome deal :-)

LOL! And how much does a trailer of DVD's weigh? about 30-40kg more than the trailer? :-)

ive towed a cast iron small block chev (with manifolds and all) and a super heavy industrial engine crane in a 6x4. i would estimate at least half a ton plus trailer. no problem. no brakes, single axle trailer.

I have a tow bar on my Soarer. Im yet to use it though.

it bolts up to the mounts that hold the rear mufflers in place. I wouldnt put too much stress on it. Im sure that you could get a better one made though.

I'll get some pics for you if you want.

Wynnum towbars, in Brisbane have a jig to make them.
I got one fitted and wired for $450.
Apparently there is also a place in Sydney that can supply them. (If you search you may find my 'Wanted to buy - Towbar' query from a couple of months ago)
Mine is rated to 1200kg.

It's not only the towbar it's self that effects the rating, it's also the way it's connected to the car.

I am getting a towbar in a few months time, hoping to get at least a 1200kg attached rating towbar :-)

Mines bolted in 3 different places with 12 bolts I think, so I'm confident it can pull over 1500kg. They use some existing bolts as well.

Sorry havnt been on the forum much lately. Started a new job.

Last pic shows how its connected to the car. It uses the bolts that hold up the exhaust. I wouldnt trust this position for much down force. ALthough for a direct pull (ie. a balanced trailer) they would be excellent.

Drove through Dandenong today, saw a new store.
'Nuff said.
